In a nutshell, 965 will support Kentsfield but as with Core 2 Duo (and previous CPU architecture transitions), the mobo must conform to certain specs for the Voltage Regulation Module (VRM) we all know and love, plus the Gunning Transceiver Logic Reference Voltage (GTLRef).
If the mobo was actually designed for the 975 it should be good to go and presumably by the time C-2 revision 965 is available, more mobos will conform but still a li'l more research is in order to be sure of maximizing upgrade options.
