Hi all,
Just a quick post because I haven't done any research on this and I need a quick answer. My friend has offered me a 6600GT 128 MB Vivo for next to nothing as he is upgrading his system. My present card is a 9600XT 256 MB. Is it worth me taking him up on it? The rest of my specs are: 1 GB OCZ Dual Channel RAM, A7N8X Deluxe mobo, AMD 2500+ CPU.
I play HL2, Doom 3, Quake 4, etc.
Tia for any info.

As much as people around here dislike Tom's Hardware, they do have some nice graphics card benchmarks.

Here is Doom 3 and Half Life 2.

This might help in making the decision.
If you don't feel like looking at the benchmarks, the 6600GT preforms about twice as well as the 9600XT does in Doom 3, and about 30% better on Half Life 2.

Thanks. Based on those, it's a slam dunk for the 6600 GT wouldn't you say?

I would think so, yes. The 6600GT is just about the most powerful graphics card you can get for that computer without being limited by the CPU too much. It will do much better in Doom 3 and Quake 4, although I don't think you will see much of an improvement in Half Life 2, unless you are running at high resolutions.

not true. look at all teh benchmarks. video games are primarily gpu dependant. the cpu is the smaller factor when it comes to gaming.

as for this poll, teh 6600gt by far. it is quite faster than teh 9800xt. the 9600 xt is the same thing as the x600 xt. basically, its just a name change.
