Hi all,

Just curious how much of a performance increase I would see going from a radeon 9600xt to something like an x800gt on an old P4 533 fsb system. The cpu is a 2.54 P4, 512 ram and the agp slot is 4x...unfortunately. Would I see a drastic increase with an x800gt on an older system like mine??

I play racing sims mostly....GTR, GT Legends and occasionally GPL and Nascar 2003. Sometimes a fps for a diversion...

thanks,

Chappie :)

For a second I thought I saw "9800xt", and was about to comment on the absurdness of this sidegrade, but seeing it's a 9600xt, then a x800gt would be a nice upgrade.

Hi guys,

thanks for the replies...I kind of figured as much. I guess my main concern would be how the x800gt would work in my dog of a motherboard and it's x4 agp slot? Would there be significant difference in the way it works in the x4 slot compared to a x8 slot??

thanks again!!

It would theoretically work just fine but the X800GT is a PCIe only part and looks to remain that way, meaning at the moment your best (value) bet would be an NVidia GeForce 6600 (ideally a GT) in AGP format. A full-blown X800 would be another option.

4x AGP is plenty fast enough, I'm running a Pentium M i855 based board and that is restricted to 4x as well, but runs nicely with a 6800LE (unlocked).

EDIT - I take that back, I just saw a GeCube X800GTO in AGP format. Though I was pretty sure X800GTs were PCIe just the same as the GeForce 7 series...

Your best overall performance upgrade for your system would be to purchase an AGP Nvidia 6600GT for around $150 or less and and extra stick of 512MB ram for $40-$50 range.

This way for under $200 you'll have a very nice bump in speed both in games and apps.
