AMD Athalon XP 2400+
MSI KT4V-L
512MB RAM
ATI 9600XT
Windows XP + SP2

Just got a hand-me-down 9600XT from a friend. I formatted, installed Catalyst 6.7 and when Windows booted back up, I could not get out of 640x480/256 resolution, and the Windows inferface was broken.

So, I reformatted and decided to install the VIA 4in1 driver (5.07a), and then when I booted into Windows, the screen was black, and the monitor went into standby. I can boot into Windows in safe mode, and everything is ok. Windows says something was changed, would you like to go back to the way it was, I clicked "No" the first time, and "Yes" the second. Neither option changed anything.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi there & welcome to the forums.

Try downloading & running "Driver Cleaner". What you want to do is remove any & all video drivers before you install those fancy new Catalyst drivers ;)

You might also want to try a previous version of Catalyst if the ones you are trying to install are beta drivers. There are also different drivers available (Omega, etc) which might help you get the most out of your card.

The fact that you can boot into safe mode is a good thing - if you can go into safe mode w/ networking, you will still be able to download Driver Cleaner. Hope this helps - report back with your progress & good luck.

There is a known incompatibility issue between KT400 mainboards and pretty much all Radeon 9600 series cards. I actually just had this same issue on an Albatron KX400-8X and a Radeon 9600 Pro last weekend, couldn't get the two to play nice together, but both parts work fine with other hardware.

If you do a google search you'll find more info on this problem, but no real solution.
