9600XT or 5200Ultra.

Is it worth the extra money for the 9600XT. Will I really notice the difference in games? Any personal experience would be great. Thanks.
 
Also, what is the rest of your system, and what screen resolution is acceptable to you if you are planning to play Doom3 and/or Half-Life 2?

I don't know what prices in the states are like for 5900XTs, but if the 9800 Pro is close, then it'd be a better buy.


But as for 9600XT vs. 5200U...there's no comparison. Avoid anything 5200 like death.
 
a 5200U is a POS man... Don't bother with it. Why the 9600 XT though? Ther are a few others that have a much better price and comparable performance like the 9600 PRo ect ect.

And then for 20 dollars more you can get a 256mb and then for a bit more than that you can get a 6800nu, and then...

Just stick to what he is asking about in his price range. Of course a vid card that costs more money is going to be better (not always but generally). I would say, if you got the money for a 9600xt then go for it. It is a great casual gamers card and is fairly cheap.

i think the $20 more in this case warrants the upgrade. its an entire generation jump for $20. 8pipes vs. 4 pipes.

i really think the OP should consider the 5900XT for 170...

Somewhat. Some of you know I'm running far better hardware than either of those two cards. Someone has told me on another forum (Comcast) that the difference between the 5200ultra and the 9600pro would be purely subjective. My argument was that if you can actually play games on one bet not the other there is nothing subjective about that. I had suggested that a poster who was having trouble playing games (5200ultra) upgrade to the 9600XT. The poster was originally going to upgrade his ram (he had 512Mb 3200) but I convinced him that was not his problem and suggested the 9800 pro or 9600xt. His budget is around $150 and the 9600xt is the sure thing but there was also a hot deal that allowed for getting the 9800pro for the same price. However I don't know if he had the upfront money or wanted to take a chance on rebate land. The other poster was arguing that he would not see any benefit going from the 5200ultra to the 9600xt and it was not worth $150. He suggested that I ask 10 computer savy gamers and they would tell me the same thing.



For the record I run a 2.8c @ 3.5 and a 9800pro @411/375 ---- and a 3.2c and 9800xt.

If he's got a hard budget of $150, I'd suggest a 9600Pro (~$110), as it is almost as fast as the 9600XT and quite a bit faster than the 5200 -- unless you can find a 9700Pro or 9800NP (not the 9800SE) for that price. You could certainly find a used/refurb one, but many people (understandably) want a warranty on this kind of purchase.

Also, maybe this would show him how bad the 5200 (even the Ultra) is...
