9600XT ---> bit of a let down?

any one think that the XT version of the 9600 is just all bark n no bite?

having looked at some reviews i was quite amazed to see that the XT outperformed the Pro by an almost un-noticable amount (like 5% or sumthing) even tho its got that low k stuff and is 100mhz faster. even in pixel shader intensive stuff u would be hard pressed to notice the extra performance.

whats even better is the fact that the old 9500pro can keep up and beat the XT, most probably because of its 8 pipes, (does 8 pipes at 275mhz = 4 pipes at 550mhz?)

i still say if u can find one get a 9500pro, but i dont reckon the 9600xt is worth the extra green over the 9600pro

Well, there is always the copy of HalfLife 2 to consider.

I've got an old Ti4200 and would love to buy an old 9500P, if its as good as that XT. may cost more though.

Most of the tests I've seen have the XT a little faster than the Pro. Do I think its worth me spending 180 to go from my 9600 Pro to an XT? No.

Instead of pumping up the core clock on the 9600 XT, ATI would have done well to increase its memory clock as well. The XT with its 500/600 DDR speeds is not that much about the Pro@ 400/600 DDR. The XT with 500/700 would be a much higher performer.

the Anand write up on the 9600XT commented that when you get GPU intensive (as opposed to memory bandwidth) tasks like PS2.0 routines... that extra 100MHz will definately make the 9600XT shine over the 9600Pro.

You mean the 9500 Pro being faster than the 9600XT? Well, its not like you have a choice considering I dont think the still make 9500P's...
