do i need to flash the BIOS for overclocking programs to allow 9600pro overclocking?
i think i have 2a samsung ram, is this good for oveclocking?
also, will a zalman Z80A-HP work on the 9600pro?
finally, what do most people hit with the 9600pro?
and is 15mhz increments for testing ok?

thanks

1. you dont need to flash BIOS, just get an OC utility from guru3d or wherever
2. it has good OCing RAM
3. i'm pretty sure it will fit
4. i hit 520/375
5. 15mhz increments is ok, but it will take too long. i would jump straight to 450, then go 15 mhz increments from there. go straight to 350 too

I ordered the Sapphire 9600 PRO from Newegg. Worst overclocker I have ever owned. It has 3.3ns 300 MHz on it for one, and second, the highest I could push this card was 459/314 and this even had some artifacts while running 3dmark03. Totally Stable I had to run it at 445/307. I ended up RMA'ing this card because I had called Newegg before ordering it and was told it came with Samsung 2.8ns 350MHz ram. It actually has Samsung K4D263238E-GC33 ram, so after calling Newegg on the phone they gave me the go ahead to RMA it.

I'm now waiting for my Powercolor 9600 Pro Ultra to get here.

If you want to overclock your 9600 Pro stay as far away from Sapphire as you can. Either order a BBA 9600 Pro or the Powercolor. The Sapphire is a POS.

If anyone is interested I'll post my results with the Powercolor Ultra once I get it.

Please post your results on the ultra. I've been unable to find reviews on the ultra version and I'm debating getting a powercolor pro and hoping for the best or getting the ultra for a tiny bit more... I'm not sure if it's just the settings or if there's an actual difference in the memory used btw. the two.

I don?t know what Sapphire has been doing lately but they seem to be on some cheap-ville program with their memory and I?m not impressed. I was considering a Sapphire 9600pro but I?ve now crossed Sapphire off my list.

Sapphire is making at least 2 versions of the 9600pro, one called the Fireblade ? that with comes with the good Samsung 2.8ns memory and some other versions presumably OEM. I?ve seen some with 2.8 ns from EtronTech and I?ve even seen 3.3ns Samsung on Sapphire Atlantis 9600pro?s. There have been some minor performance anomalies reported with the Etron memory ? beyond3d .

The PowerColor?s come with the good Samsung 2.8ns as do the retail ATI models.

Exactly my thoughts too.

On the memory issue it is too bad that Sapphire is using cheaper spec?d memory but as long at it runs the 300Mhz it was advertised too --- I guess it?s buyer beware, the 9600pro still performs great at default spec.

I will say that I thought that all 9600pro?s would be spec?d with 2.8ns memory. I would kind of be ticked too expecting a 2.8ns card and getting something else. The one good thing about those OEM Sapphire 9600pro 3.3ns cards is that they should be very economically priced in a few months.

yeah, it preforms fine at stock but its strong point is its overclockability

Not all 9600 Pro's have 2.8ns RAM. I just got one with 3.3ns. I'm going to see if ATI will RMA it for me if it doesn't overclock well though...I guess I'll say it has artifacts or something with everyday use. It's not moral, but neither is it for ATI to send all the reviewers 2.8ns chips and then start selling retail versions with 3.3ns ones.

Ya, that?s almost like pulling a bait-and-switch.

ok, eric, i know you are dissapointed in the fact that it does not OC and i understand you want to RMA it for that reason. if i were you i would RMA it too BUT ATi did nothing wrong. i mean they dont guarentee that the 9600 pro will overclock to 500/375 or whatever. it is a given that they are gonna hand pick cards to review. if you saw the DDR400 review, Crucials pc3200 was able to do 420+ @ 2-2-2-5. i seriously doubt ANY consumer will get ram from crucial that is willing to do that. i dont know what kind of ram i have on my 9600 pro but it can do 520/375 but the Alpha numeric serial on them is SAMSUNG 313 K4026323RA-GC2A
