9600Pro "advantage" by mistake - will I notice a diff?

I ordered a 9600PRO OEM card from newegg and kinda got gypped ... although the site product info says the memory clock speed is 600mhz (300x2), what I actually got was 233mhzx2 = 466mhz.

It is still a 9600PRO, with the 400mhz core clock, but just cheaper RAM. Made as OEM by Sapphire, and surreptiously labeled the "Advantage " model, I bet there are thousands of premade PC owners (Dell, etc.) out there who have this bargain version and don't even know it. Unfortunately, I check these things.

Well, newegg is willing to take it back since their website info was incorrect. But its quite a hassle ... I'll be waiting at least 10 days before I have a replacement in hand. More importantly, with my old rig, I doubt I'm gonna actually see any difference since any game or app is probably gonna be CPU-limited before this card ever hits its limit.

I have a KT266A board, XP1700+, and 512mb PC2100. I was running a GeF4Ti4400 but its fritzing out on me. (TV-out is dead and we use it a lot.)

Yes, I use the PC for some gaming, but not top shelf PC games. Mostly console emulation. The current setup (before the GeF4 blew) could handle all but the most demanding N64 games. As long as things don't get any slower, I'll be happy. I know my next rig will be all new from the ground up except for the floppy maybe.

So, RMA to newegg, or just shrug the shoulders and be more careful next time?

I always say take what you paid for or you encourage saphire to keep up this type of marketing. Same thing happened to me a few months ago with ncix and I returned it.

well, don't get me wrong ... I agree with you guys in principle. But what I really need to know is if the reduced RAM clock speed will make a hill of beans difference considering the age of my PC. Heck, even the 256mb version of the 9600PRO uses RAM that's slower than what I got with this "advantage" card.

It's gonna cost me money and a lot of downtime to replace what I have with a card which I know matches the reference specs, so it needs to be worth it for me to go through with it. I have a 12 year old who is already exhibiting withdrawals because he can't watch his Naruto episodes I've downloaded for him. Just kidding, but seriously I have to think about more than just whether I got exactly what I ordered. The distinction here between what I thought was coming vs. what actually came is pretty minor ... it's not like I ordered a X850XTPE and got a Radeon 7000 instead.

If it didn't bother me at all though, I wouldn't have posted. But I need an objective opinion to help me decide what to do ... is it gonna matter in my system?

no big deal, maybe you can overclock it tp the speed it was supposed to be. you're building a new rig eventually anyways, maybe get them give you some kind of coupon or something.

Yes bandwidth matters. I would return it.

It doesn't mean crap to have an excellent GPU when you have no Bandwidth to back it up.

If it was cheaper, than you got what you payed for. If it wasn't then return it and just buy a used 9700 pro from the FS/FT forums.

VIAN,

I know youre right, especially if I try to run Farcry or something it could still make a small difference even with my PC being made up of parts on everyone's "legacy" pages. But Todd makes a good point too ... this card was cheap. Buying a (new) card that I KNOW will match the reference specs will cost me more. As for buying something used, I don't really want the wait and potential for problems.

I appreciate the help guys. Still haven't decided.

I was actually thinking of getting that same card, when I heard of Sapphire's "green" board having underclocked memory. I'm now thinking of purchasing this card MSI. Does anyone know if the TRUE effective speed is going to be 600MHz?

I would try to pick up a 9700 pro used for the same money. It is still a great card and has loads more power than the 9600.

As for the one you have now, definitely send it back.

Double check MSI's spec against what Newegg says it is first. But it does look like the true effective speed is 600MHz DDR.

And Scurvy, is that -4ns ram on your card? If it is, most of that stuff will do 275MHz when overclcocked. And if it is 3.3ns or faster will of course clok even higher.

I took the chance and bought the MSI 9600 PRO card. MSI's site claims it's a true 600MHz effective speed. We will see how it performs!

id return it, sapphire r scum lol

I think most people would agree and disagree.

Sapphire seem to be one of the best manufacturers of ATI stuff going but have a tendancy to release crippled or hindered versions of cards which people buy mistaking them for fully-fledged models.

128-bit 9800Pro anyone? 🙂 Im glad I made sure I got a 256-bit one from Sapphire and I havent looked back yet.
