I tried to upgrade video cards from an Asus V7700 Geforce 2 GTS to a PowerColor 9600np today. This is the single most difficult upgrade I have ever attempted. The Asus card is starting to flake out in 3D games by making a high pitched whining sound and displaying a blue background with white penstripes. The lockups are getting more frequent, but only in 3D applications.
Issue #1
Connected monitor (Nokia 446Xpro) to VGA port on card. Booted up to see green text/graphics where normally white text is on BIOS POST.
Shut down and used DVI-VGA adapter to connect VGA monitor to DVI input on card and this resolved the issue.
Issue #2
Card installed and try to install ATI software, but system locks up midway through installation. The conflict is with my SCSI driver "fireport.sys". I tried 3 times, each locking up to blue screen indicating fireport.sys had crashed. I copy driver CD to harddrive and remove my SCSI adapter. Drivers/ATI software installs.
Issue #3
Rebooting after successfull hardware and software installation locks up after Windows 2000 splash screen. This time ATI is conflicting with LSASS.EXE. This is the first time I see the cool immenent shutdown notification screen telling me how many seconds I have before all work in progress is lost. This operating system has been through numerous hardware upgrades and never have I experienced anything this bad.
I will be exchanging the 9600np for an FX5600 as I know nVidia drivers work on this system. Has anyone else had these troubles switching to ATI?
Admittedly, most of my hardware is ancient in computer terms; but still performs acceptably. Windows 2000 has accepted everything I've thrown at it with no problems.
One gripe I have about the ATI installation is that you have to execute the software for it to automatically install drivers. I would prefer to point to the correct driver from hardware manager and avoid the automagic stuff.
I tried everything within reason to get this card to work on what should have been a painless installation. I even RTFM, which is something I never have to resort to when installing hardware.
