9600m and Upgrades

From what I've been reading, it seems that it may be possible to upgrade systems from existing ATI Radeon cards. Is this at all possible?

And - more specifically - I have a dell inspiron 5100 with an ATI 7500M. I know from reading the service manual that the existing video card can be removed easily. Would a 9600m be able to replace it?
