Ok, I know the 9800GTX would beat the 9600GT. What I have been looking for is a good review of both cards. I am building a new system for the wife and trying to see if the cost increase for 9800GTX compared to performance is really worth it. She currently plays WoW however the game we are waiting for is Warhammer online. She has a 20in widescreen LCD and I will play the game at 1680x1050. I know we do not know what the spec's are on the game so kinda have to go by what I see in the screen shots.

Her current setup is AMD 939 3400 with a 6800GT video card. So you can see it is about time for an upgrade. :)

thanks

The GTX is about twice the GT's price - you could SLI and beat it (I believe), but I wouldn't bother. I think the GT should be more than enough for what you're looking at.

If your GTS is satisfactory you should be happy with the 9600GT. I believe the 9600GT edges out the 8800GTS (320).

Thanks for the response. This is for the wife which is currently running 6800GT. I however will go for the 9800GTX. :)

I will look at the GT little more now for her system.

I thought the 3400+ chip was restricted to socket 754? Better check its a PCI-Express board.

Well that's where hybrid boards like EPOX 8NPA SLI comes in. I bought one a while back and it let me prolong the inevitable a bit longer. It allowed me to keep my ram and CPU. In retrospect I wouldn't do it again but allowed me to save the cost of a processor for the short term.

I will be building her a whole new pc. Currently I have this for my setup.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive -

EVGA 512-P3-N861-AR GeForce 9600GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX All Solid Capacitor Intel Motherboard

Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 Wolfdale 2.66GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model
Microsoft Windows XP Home With SP2B 1 Pack

We have a case and good PSU. My question which video card to go with the GT or GTX, considering the $150+ increase in cost.

For $30 more a 8800gt ($150) could be a good middle ground between 9600gt and 9800gtx. And with some overclocking, the 8800gt will match a stock 9800gtx performance. Another option could be a 8800gts 512mb ($178), which is just a lower clocked 9800gtx. So basically, there's no point in getting a 9800gtx as the identical 8800gts 512mb (slightly lower stock clocks) is almost $100 less and the 8800gt is almost just as good.
Basically, you can expect 8800gts (with a 50mhz overclock) to be similar to a 9800gtx at stock speeds (both can go another 100mhz higher to about 800mhz) and 10-15% higher frame rates than 8800gt.

It's astonishing how much vid card prices have dropped with regard to performance segments :) Somehow it makes me wonder if this will last...
