Across the board it was ~0.7% faster. The general consensus was that the gts won in quite a few cases that didnt matter and cases that did matter the 9600gt usually won by a few % pts. I'll try and find the link.
Like Lithan said, it's fairly equal with the 640 card. However, the newer card uses less power and generates less heat, although the cooler on the old GTS was better.
I like the cooler on my Palit 9600GT. It's quiet and effective. I never used the 8800gts 640, so I can't compare. However, I remember how awful the stock cooler sounded on my 7800GT. With that card and a Zalman cooler, I was still hitting 80+ C. The 9600GT is in the 50's under load.
Those cards are close to each other. The 9600GT has 32 less shaders, but uses the newer core at much higher clock speeds. The 9600GT also has a smaller memory bit width (256 as opposed to 320 on the 8800GTS (G80)). But again, clocked much higher.
Well G80 8800 GTS stock cooler is very good:
At 650/2000 clock (about 25% for both memory and core) I have to put that fan speed to 60% where it's practically undetectable. I don't remember temps right now..I remember that they weren't too bad..no trouble there
