Been out of the loop for a while. What's a good upgrade to a GeForce 9600GT running at 1920x1200. Computer has a Core 2 Duo E8400 (overclocked to 3.6 GHz), with a Corsair 650W power supply.

I'm thinking GTX 460 or GTX 560 ti. Given my cpu, do you think the gtx 560 ti would provide higher fps than the gtx 460?

Just googled C2D E8400 + overclocking, seems alot of people max out around 3,6-3,7ghz.
So your CPU probably isnt gonna give much more.

Im suprised you can game at 1920x1200 with a 9600GT..
I guess it depends on quality settings and AA/AF though.

So the good news, is either card a 460 1gb or 560ti would result you being able to crank up the eye candy.

< removed non-sense I wrote here before >

Would you see higher fps with the 560ti than a 460? yes you would :)

You'd be putting a GPU alot faster into your pc, should give you a nice boost, and allow for some eyecandy.

Go with the 6870 superb bang for the buck. I nice one can be had for around $160 with deals coming up for a little less here and there.

Arkadrel, some of your numbers are quite a bit off. a 4870 would be twice as fast not just 60% faster. and how would a 5870 be a whopping 120% faster than the 4870? anyway his cpu is going to play a role here too of course. he mentioned playing flight sims on another forum.

Hmmm. Hadn't even considered the AMD. I'll have to read up on it. Does the AMD support PhysX? I just googled the 6870. Dang. That thing is big. Looks a lot bigger than the gtx460.

@Toyota the %s are relative to the 9600GT, not each other.
So the differnce in % from one another is not linar, the base of compairsion is the 9600GT.

Here a exsample:
perfrel_1920.gif

9600GT is 53% of a 4870......

I could have sworn I just looked at some charts, where it was around 63% though,
which then become 4870 =~ 60% faster (or 160%).

In the above it looks more like:
53/100 = 0.53

Which would mean the 4870 would be close to 190% of a 9600GT 's performance.

*caugh caugh*

caution, nr's above (my first post) are probably off by some margin. take it with a grain of salt

I vote for 6870. If he has a second PCI-E slot, he can always crossfire later.

hd 6850 or 6790.. more cost effective, the cost the same as some 6770's and performance is solid. they also only need a single 6-pin. cfx is possible with and the 6790 is brand new (as far as 6000 series cards are concerned) therefore it will be in stock longer than the others.
preformance wise its easily over the 50% better threshold and would easily do anything you ask of it sub 1080p on high or better.
and thats, whats up!

Physx is a Nvidia thing only but do you play any games that actually have it? Last I remember there were only a handful of titles that support hardware accelerated physx. If I'm not mistaken many games support/use physx on a software level that any card can take advantage of but I've found personally that physx is not a major selling point for me. AMD makes some great products and usually offer better performance for price. Please no flame war just my opinion as I've owned products from both camps and respect the preferences of others.

I just measued my current video card (PALit 9600GT) and it is only 3.5" wide. I can't go wider than about 4.25" without removing the fan on the side of my case. Newegg lists the GTX460 @ 4.38" wide. I think the 6870 is about the same. I don't know what I'm going to do. I guess I could remove the fan, but that would make my system run even hotter.

again i recommend 6790.. not to much bigger, slightly taller than your 9600gt, consumes about the same power wise. and its a strong performer. this particular model also happens to run quite cool, about as cool as you have it now though TC dusting your pc would probably help a bit temp wise..
