Well...all my current specs are in my sig...motherboard only has 1 PCI-e 16x slot and 3 PCI-e 1x slots.

Basically...I'm upgrading to a HD4870 (on its way from Newegg) and I just want to know if my 9600GT can run in a 1x PCI-e slot for Physx processing.

Looking for a simple yes/no. Thanks.

No. Form factor will not work. Might fry your motherboard too.

On the contrary - it WOULD work, except for the fact that most PCIe x1 sockets are closed meaning the board itself won't fit mechanically. Note, I'm not advising anyone to go with a pair of clippers and notch out the end of their PCIe slot... but electrically it should work just fine.

Wasn't there a thg article where they did just this to test if modern gpus are limited by bandwidth at pci-e x8, x4, and x1? They just clipped the end off their slots and stuck the cards in and they worked fine, just slower IIRC

Will run you $20-$30:

PCIE x16 to PCIE x1 Adapter

x1 is enough bandwidth for PhysX data too, I remember seeing a few reviews with either the Ageia card or perhaps an x16 + x1 or x4 that showed no penalties in PhysX performance.

I just cut my PCIE-X1 slot on P965 and installed the 9600GT sucessfully!

The PhysX FluidMark is 2500 -more than the 9800GT reported on the score site.
but the score is 5900 with 8800GTX itself.

P965/ Q6600 2.4G/ 4GB DDRII-800
GPU1 8800GTX
GPU2 9600GT (runing as PhysX card)
-----------------
WIndows XP SP2/ NV driver 185.85 WHQL

If it's an open ended PCIe 1x slot it'll work. Just insert and go. It won't work at full speed though. If it's not an open ended slot, you can cut that end open and still put the card in.

Support in the BIOS is another issue though.

I think Tom's did one such article. They just used the x16 slot for all the tests, and masked (using electrical tape?) off the extra bits to force the lower bandwidth.
