9600GT for 1280x1024?

It's an old card, but would it be able to handle most games on high settings, 8xAA, 4xAF on a 1280x1024 monitor?

it should be able to handle most everything but you will have to disable (or reduce) AA on some newer games and there will be a few that you might have to step down other settings also. Should be able to max AF for everything.

The 9600GT is only a DirectX 10 card so forget playing games like BF:BC2 with all of the DirectX 11 eye candy on.

If you want to play Crysis 2 DirectX 9 @ 1280 X 1024 with all eye candy then you might have a shot at it, but more than likely without AA.

I have a 9800GT which is moderately more powerful than a 9600GT. I can play most games on medium to high settings, without AA or AF at 1440 x 900 which is close to the same pixels as 1280 x 1024. And I dont play really graphically demanding games like Metro 2033 or Crysis 2.

As someone else said, a lot depends on your CPU also. With a 9600GT and a non widescreen monitor it sounds like you have an older system. I have a dual core E4500 and an finding that that seems to limit me more than the graphics card in a lot of cases.

If you have a decent CPU and power supply, or can overclock your cpu, you can get a much more powerful card such as a HD5770 or 768mb GTX 460 for around 100.00 or somewhat more.

That's asking too much of a 9600GT, especially on newer games. What CPU will it be paired up with?
No I wasn't exactly planning on using it yet. I have a choice between this card and a 4890 (both of them are my old cards). But it seems like the 4890 is a bit overkill for the resolution, so I was just wondering if a 9600gt would do. It's paired up with a stock i3 530 btw.

So you want 8x AA but only 4x AF? 😱
I meant 16x AF *

For reference have a 9600gt paired up with an athlon ii x2 250 and it runs WoW catacylsm fine @ 1366x768 with "Good" settings. Going up to High or higher causes FPS drops

wow, i use the 9600GT @ 16x10 with no worries, I had a Q6600 @ 3ghz with it before the i5, however i dont have any slow down as long as i dont used AA etc....Even played Crysis with it!, Far Cry 2 and Wolfenstein
You should be good to go at 12x10 even with some AA
