Hello to All,
I recently switched my video card from an AIW 7500 to a 9600 Pro; both are Retail ATI cards in an AMD machine. The computer is built on a VIA KT266A chipset running a T-bird 1.2Ghz CPU and 1024MB of PC2100 memory. I used the latest VIA drivers for the chipset, 4.49. The AIW 7500 was using Catalyst 3.7 drivers and the 9600 Pro used the Catalyst 3.9 drivers.

I ran AquaMark3 and 3D Mark03 benchmark in default modes just to keep it simple.

Here are the results:

AIW 7500 64MB (250/400) 3DMark03 AquaMark3

9600 Pro 128 MB (400/600) 3DMark03 AquaMark3

I am very happy with the upgrade. :D

well the 7500 all in wonder is a direct x 8 card, while the 9600 pro is a direct x 9 card.

So of course your score is gonna go though the roof, the 7500 doesn't even run the direct x 9 tests.

you can't really use those benchmark tools to compare the two cards

its like comparing apples and oranges

No... 3DMark2003 uses DX9... your GF3 doesn't support DX9.

I disagree. Of course the 2 cards are worlds apart. You should expect that when you jump 2 product cycles. As an owner of an AIW 7500 myself I appreciate the effort to compare an aging card with the newer technology. I believe the answer to the question "Can my 7500 run Half-life 2?" is a resounding NO. OK, maybe at 640x480 with no AA, AF.

So here's a toast  to Quixfire for making the effort and reporting the results.

HL2 will be hideous on a 7500 if indeed it will run smoothly (DX7 feature set). It will look awesome on the 9600Pro. Let's just hope it performs smoothly ;).

Thank you, you hit the nail on the head. I just wanted to show the advantages of upgrading a computer to a DirectX 9 card over the older mid-range cards. So many posts show the difference between the last cycle of products and the new ones. Not everybody upgrades their video card every year or upgrade to latest and greatest when they do. Very few reviews even include these older mid-range cards in their test to show us what we could look forward to if we do upgrade.
