9600 Pro replacement? (nvidia or ati)

I'm building a new system for a friend and would like a nice modern gfx card with a DVI port. The mobo will probably have x16 PCI-E. Anyway.... I love the Radeon 9600 Pro in my other systems, it's the perfect balance of price and excellent DX9 performance. My question is this: what new PCI-E ATI or NVIDIA graphics cards compare well to the Radeon 9600 Pro? I don't need a turbo-charged GeForce 6800! But I also want something more powerful than the weak Radeon 9250 or GeForce FX5200 "Ultra". I haven't kept up with the new PCI-E cards, all I know is that I want appx. Radeon 9600 Pro performance. THX in advance!

How does the X600 Pro compare? That is more of the price range I would like to spend. I only need Radeon 9600 Pro performance. The reason the system will probably have PCI-E is due to using a newer mobo. I like the idea of getting a board with more modern I/O types, even though they may not be used for awhile.

Although, the more I read, the more I think I may just go 875 (AGP) chipset and the Radeon 9600 Pro I already have experience with. If it ain't broke... 🙂
