Essentially there are 2 varients of the 9800se. ... one with a cheaper board design and memeory running at a 128bit bus.. (will be close to 9600 linein speeds) and a second one is a 9800 with only 4 rendering pipelines
I would probably go with the 9800SE of there price is the same
if the price were the same, 9800se, but in reality the price of the 9800se is much higher thatn for a 9600 pro, so i'd either get the 9600pro or spring for a full fledged 9800 non pro
There are apparently 2 versions of the 9800SE. One clocked 380/340 (same as 9800pro and on 256bit bus) that has 4 pipelines disabled, and a 9800SESE that is clocked 325/250 (with -4ns/3.6ns memory), although I don?t know if the SESE will be available here in North America.
The performance of the 9800SE appears to be about 10% better than a 9600pro. ?
9800 pro ? ? 5608
9600 pro ? ?3437
9800SE ? ?3710
9800SE ? ? 5404 ? (softmod)
but I'm hearing that they can easily be softmoded ebay into 9800 pro?s.
The advantage of the 9600 pro is a lot less power consumption and maybe better overclocking. I?ve seen the 9800SE for $188 which is only about $20 more than a good 9600pro.
Well you can get a 9600 pro for $150, so the 9800se would have to be no more than $170 to be worth it in my opinion. There is a chance of it modding, but the odds of it being successful don't look too good to me. The 9600 pro would probably oc better than the 9800 too.
