stuck between those video cards. currently there are two cards in mind:
BFG Asylum Fx5900 non ultra at best buy for $199.99 after 50 dollar rebate
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro at newegg.com for $178 (authentic manu. by ati)

The fx5900 is a good deal because it can be softmoded to a 5900 ultra. i not quite sure but i believe the radeon 9600 series is not capable of being softmodded.
Which ones of these should i get? or is there a better deal or card that im not aware of?
any help would be appreicated.
edit----im also looking into the 9600xt
Sapphire Atlantis 9600XT 182 at newegg.com

Neither can be softmodded to anything, but they can both be overclocked. I would get the 5900 at those prices. For $20 more it'll perform a lot better. I would only get the 9600 pro if you got it for around $140.

Assuming you're choosing only between those two, I'd get the FX5900 since the price difference is only $20ish

Get the FX5900nu - it smokes the 9600Pro and 9600XT.

Also, as said before, neither need to be "softmodded" (they are not crippled cards.. well, the 9600 series is kind of a crippled 9800) - you just overclock them.

The main "softmoddable" cards are the: 9500 non-pro (L-shaped memory), 9800SE. It's risky buying a softmoddable card because they often don't mod or have artifacts. The FX5900 and 9600 Pro are sure things - they perform well out of the box. However, the FX5900 is considerably faster in everything but preliminary DX9 benchmarks.

Can't stress that enough.

New Drivers will come out, gotta have faith in nVidia, i orded the XFX 5900nu, which has 2.2ns ram from buy.com for 177 afr. I would get that if i were you, the 4 pipelines in 9600 cripple in darasticly.

Why are people comparing High end cards too midrang cards !!! ???

The FX 5900 is a high end card and it not in the same leag as the 9600Pro or XT
If you want to compar the FX5900 then do so by comparing it to the 9800 Pro or 9800 non pro ..

Its twice as fast in every game and benchmark in the world other then Half-life2 ALPHA BETA PROMO BS TEST VERSION when compared to the 9600 Pro or XT
every bench test on the net proves this.

Its simple videoclone. The price is right.... People are starting to think the 5900 is a slouch because of the price drops. They are thinking
"well, these cards are close in price so they must perform nearly equally, better get to the forum and ask around". Thats all.
Most of us here know the 5900's are top end.

When the 5900 and 9600XT cost the same, I'd say it's a fair comparison. Good to see the price war.

The 5900 smokes the 9600XT and then some.

Nuh-uh! When HL2 comes out next spring....

LOL, yes it does outperform lowly 9600s by much, and at the same price, the only loser is ATI.

And why would someone buy a mid range card for the same price as a high end card? Logic...no..where...to ..be...found.

And Rogo, you're thinking of the GF4, not the 5900 in comparison to aa/af performance.

rogo

Gotta stop feeding the trolls:disgust:

Anyway my 5900 runs all my games at 1280x960 4xAA/8xAF with no probs what-so-ever
Now my 9800 Pro will do the same but crashes on Call of Duty, so the 5900 is currently working and the 9800 is sitting.

Take the ATI. a 9600 pro is faster then a 5950 ultra, let alone a 5900 ultra in dx9. which is the future. There is no point to buy nvidia right now.
