9600 pro/directx problems?

See if you can't help me out here. I just bought a 9600 pro but i can't play any games with it - I get black screens at startup and stuff. I can still see and move the mouse cursor though. Sometimes if I try to test directx (via dxdiag), it BSODs. But it works fine otherwise.

Actually, there was also a problem once where all of the icons were black, but I think someone else in the house fixed it.

edit: i also have the latest drivers and DirectX. System specs: XP 2200+/256 MB RAM/ECS K7S5A
 
No such luck. I've tried the latest drivers, the ones that came bundled with my CD and an older version (Catalyst 3.5 i think it was). I'm starting to have a feeling it may be something the board itself? Because I hope not.

edit: well after talking with ATI tech suport I think I've narrowed it down to the AGP driver. The thing is, every time I install one (or at least i think it gets installed), Windows gives me an protection error every time i start up, forcing me to reinstall. I did this 3 times today already. I'd appreciate it a lot if someone could help me out here.
