9600 Pro 128mb resolution

I just got the PowerColor Radeon 9600 Pro 128mb. I have installed all drivers and everything. But when I change the resolution to more than 1024x768 the screen looks weird. Its shifted and scaled and blackish. I know it may be shifted or scaled, but the blackish color, the black pixels just make it look bad. Is there something I am missing?
With my ages old TNT card, i used to run at 1152x862 and above easily...without the screen being blakish and weird screen scaling.
I have tried all refresh rates and all.
Have a Compaq MV720 monitor and is connected to the VGA port.
Is the Dvi to VGa adapter better?
 
First check what refresh rate the card is using. It is possible the default refresh rate is too high for your monitor.

Second, when you replaced your video card, did you uninstall the NVidia drivers and then run Driver Cleaner 2 to remove whatever remnants the uninstall left?
