9600 overheat

Just trying to diagnose my problem: when a 9600np overheats, is it possible that it fail-safes and ceases to display video while your applications continue running? this has happened to me a number of times while running a reference board for extended periods of time with gpu intensive apps. I tried moving a slot-fan intake onto the card's heatsink, hopefully that will help. opinions or ideas for troubleshooting?
