9600 or X800?

Ok my plan is to go somewhere like Best Buy and get a computer (desktop) on the cheap and then do some piece by piece upgrades using stuff that I have already or buying certain components. My biggest concern is video cards. How much am I losing if I got with say a Raedon 9600 vs. a Raedon X800. There is a big price gap. However if the X800 is that much better, I will spend the extra money.

I play video games btw.

thanks,
Wacki

There is a massive performance difference between a 9600 and an x800, if you plan on playing games like HL2, css, doom 3, far cry, etc. basicly new games you will want to invest in something better then a 9600

If you plan on shopping at Best Buy, I believe your best bet Video Card wise is the BFG 6800OC that they're selling for $250. Still, the performance difference between that and a 9600 is phenomenal, and if you plan on playing games, as you said, I would HIGHLY advise getting nothing less than a 9800 Pro.

I agree. 9800p or better 🙂

The X800 will utterly destroy the 9600. However, if you're just a casual gamer (like me) who doesn't demand the highest resolutions or frame rates, the 9600 is just fine. I've got one in my box and I'm very happy with it. Yay for passive cooling!
