9600 non pro or Flip Chip 5600 Ultra?

These two cards are going roughly for the same price at best buy. Which would you recommend and why?
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, get the 5600 Ultra over the 9600 NP if they both cost the same. In all situations the Ultra should do better.

By the way, what was the price that you saw these cards at?

About $150 after taxes, I think. Why not mosey on over to BestBuy.com and look for yourself?

Definitely choose a 5600U over a 9600, but I think buying a $150 9600P online would be the best choice. No rebates, and a pretty solid card all-around.

Thanks everyone. I bought the 5600U 400/800 flip chip from PNY.
Umm the 5600U went for 184.00 with a 30.00 mail in rebate. = 154.00
The 9600np went for 169.00 with a 20.00 mail in rebate. = 149.00

So its only a 5.00 dollar difference between the two and the performance you said was much better with
the 5600U. Be careful when you buy the 5600U though, you can pick up the 350/650 non flip chip version by accident.
So look closely and ask questions, if the salesperson doesn't know which is which, DONT BUY ANY ONE of them. 😀

Thanks again for the heads up on these cards guys.

What about the BFG 5600 Ultra at Best Buy for $124.99 after $50 rebate? It's also a flip chip and has gotten good reviews.

Maybe rig #2 or #3 is getting the 5600?

Edit: I guess it couldn't be going in the #3 (wife's) rig. Won't fit, right?

Actually, the BFG 5600 ultra at Best Buy is going for $174.99 with a $70 rebate that prints out at the register ($104.99). I got one and it overclocks like an SOB!! Mine will run at almost 500 DDR (1000MHZ) on the memory side, and 475 core.....🙂

No thats not it Mr. Rollo. 🙂 I am building a computer for my friend as a birthday present. I didn't want to break the bank on the vid card and right around 150 is what I was willing to spend. These two cards caught my eye and hence this post to see which one would give my friend better gaming performance out of these 2 cards. As for my 5900, I still have it and use it happily. And I still have the 9700 on the sidelines just in case.

DahDee,
Unfortunately, at the time I went to best buy, they were temporarily out of the BFG 5600U. I most likely would have gotten the BFG if it were in stock.
But the PNY was ok by me with the 30.00 rebate.

My bud doesn't know much about overclocking but I wouldn't put it past him to try. He definately likes gaming but I think he is the type that is equally impressed with the actual physical appearance of the card. In which case the PNY should suit him nicely. The PCB is bright metallic purple with a bright aluminum fan/heatsink and bright aluminum ram sinks on both sides of the card. I don't know what the BFG looks like though.

Oh and DahDee, as for the shuttle (#3 wifes rig) If you mean it wont fit because there's no AGP slot, that is correct. But If you meant the size of the card, I think it would have fit in there.

Yeah, I thought you were talking about this one. That's a good deal at ~$140 all told, and a great one at ~$120 (if the $70 MIR is correct).

If the previous post was correct, looks like the BFG card is actually only $105 after rebate! ($174.99 minus $70 rebate)

It definitely is only $105 after rebate. It is marked on the shelf that way at Best Buy and the $50 rebate and the $20 rebate print out at the register....really a good deal....🙂

I bought the 5600 Ultra too. I think it's a pretty good performer especially at Neverwinter Nights. The 9800np that I also bought was only slightly faster in this game than the 5600 Ultra. Since this is the only game that I really play, the extra cost for the 6-7 fps wasn't worthwhile. Pretty sweet card for $105! The only card that was like 15 fps faster was the 5900 Ultra that I bought a month back.

My 5600 Ultra could only get stable at 450/850. I went to 470/850, but it wouldn't benchmark 3dmark03. On coolbits, 470 is the max you can slide the core clock frequency. If you're overclocking with coolbits, I don't know how you got 475.

This is definitely a YMWV (Your Mileage Will Vary) deal, but a good example of what can happen if you keep your eyes open at Best Buy (and elsewhere, like CC) after a run of good clearance/rebate deals like we've had recently .... Went over to Best Buy to price match the Toys R Us deal on Gamecube games (they agreed to pm), and saw a BFG Asylum 5600 Ultra (flip chip) box sitting on the shelf as a I cruised by that aisle on the way to CS. It was not shrink-wrapped, had no price tag, and the shelf tag was long gone (this store sold out of these a couple of weeks ago while the second ($20) rebate was still valid (on top of the current $50 rebate). Long story shortened: the clerk agreed to mark it as an open box -- for $124.99. In addition, the $50 rebate form printed out and I'll send that in. So, if the rebate goes through (the clerk said it should be fine, as the form, unlike some rebates they run, does not specifically exclude open box items), I'll have gotten this card for $75. I was planning to wait for the new wave of cards, but couldn't pass this up. Other than waiting for the new cards, I had hoped to find an open box on this card or a 9800 Non-Pro w/Samsung mem (Ha, right, like that would happen!), so I'm pretty pleased with my discounted purchase, as long as it runs okay. The rebate would be a nice bonus, and I'll be extra happy if it overclocks anything like Jmman's!
