I just got an M811LU to replace a dead 8KHA+. When I turned the computer on for the first time all seemed normal until there was a long beep. To make a long story short I tried an older video card and everything worked as it should. Someone mentioned that there was a problem with R300 and KT266A/KT300. Is there a way to fix this or do I need a different card/board?

according to ATi's page the 9600 is 8x/4x. the board is 4x so it should be fine. the card works fine in my computer, and the board runs fine without the 9600.

Long-beep-error usually is "no RAM detected". You didn't by accident bump the DIMM out of its socket whilst putting the graphics card in? (Check whether it's properly seated _now_.) Also, it's a frequent occurance that on a new build, the mainboard hasn't aligned with the case correctly and you fail to insert the card all the way. One angry wiggle later, it fits, so the 2nd card mysteriously works then.

For the record, 9600 is 4x/8x - the AGP specification has 4x support mandatory for 8x devices, 8x-only is not allowed. The 9600, at the time of its appearance, was a first in that it dropped the (optional) 2x/1x support.

well, here's what happened.

i finished the build and powered on. cpu fan spins up and then the beep.

i disconnect all ide and pci connections leaving only the ram, agp and cpu. same result.

i take out the 9600 and put in an older geforce4mx (or something) and the computer boots up and i am able to go into the bios and make adjustments (but i didn't change anything).

i take the old card out and put the 9600 back in. fans spin and then the beeeeeep.

okay, so the board would only boot with the old card. it would not boot with a 9600, 9600pro or with a 6600GT.

when it did boot it seemed to freeze. i tried using a different power supply and was able to get into the bios.

in the bios i noticed that under the agp options the available modes were 1x/2x.

no wonder it wouldn't work with the newer cards. according to newegg and pc chips the board is 4x, so someone screwed up.

PC Chips says it's AGP 4x as well...

I would RMA the board to newegg for either a replacement or a different mobo.

The KT266 supports AGP 4x, so there is no reason that it shouldn't work.

Edit: this mobo is only warranteed through the manufacturer from newegg. If this trend continues on the egg, I might have to re-think mobo purchases from the egg...
