Hi, I don't know much about cars - except mine stopped running.

Here is what happened.

Cranked it - the SUV then started a high pitched whine that continued 'after' I removed the key. It was like the starter got stuck on 'wide' open crank (if that makes sense). Even after moving the key it was making that noise, and it finally stopped (like a minute later). I was running trying to get something to disconnect the battery cable, but it went off before I was able to.

Upon trying to 'recrank' it just goes 'click' 'click' - no turn over or anything. Had to get towed home.

Starter? Something else? Battery is actually only 3 weeks old. Connections are good.

Alternator. Your new battery is dead again. Or the starter itself. Check battery voltage to know which. If you're certain it hasn't drained again, then the starter gear and solenoid is damaged.

Battery voltage is good - thats all I know how to check at this minute.

Forgive my newbishness when it comes to cars, but then this is probably a standard 'starter' replacement ?? (not sure if the solenoid is part of the starter, etc). Trying to figure out how much this is going to cost me.

Thanks.

Let me be specific with the 'click' 'click' part. The 'click' only happens once when I turn the key, then nothing - as if it is totally dead. I didn't want you to think that when the key was in it was just going 'click click click' on it's own - just one time when I turn my key then nothing till I turn my key again. One click and sad silence.

Solenoid is built into the starter engagement mechanism and acts a both a relay and solenoid. Older cars had the external ignition relay solenoid the only provides power to the starter.

Easy to tell the difference by the small "start signal" wire that goes into a modern starter along with the heavy cable that comes straight from the battery with nothing in between.

Hi, mechanic replaced starter, changed my oil, fixed my gasket on the moonroof, and repaired a light issue I was having with front left headlight - all for $325. He even towed it to the shop and picked me up for that price. I'm happy. Hopefully, it'll run another year without work needed 😛

230,000 and counting. . . heh. . .
