hi all,

I've been trying to sift through all the softmod posts but cannot determine whether it's a reliable hack. Also, I need to know whether it can be done on the 64MB models, and whether the non-Pro 9500 cards can be hacked.

I'd appreciate your responses to my questions:).

thanks,

Erik

It only works on the 128Mb version of the card, it HAS to have the 256bit data bus to the memory, which the 64Mb version deffinately don't have.

It's not a very reliable hack at all, most people including me has tried it and got a checkerboarding effect on any 3d accelereted application..

Also most of the 9500 non pro's being sold now are unmodable, they used to use the same pcb as the 9700 with the 256bit bus but now they have the 128bit bus version of the card..

Hope this helps...

The mod has to be completed on a 9500np with 128Mb of RAM. As well, you need the 9700 pcb layout, otherwise it will not work.

Actually, the hack can be peformed on the 64 meg non-pro and it will turn it into an unofficial "64 meg 9500 Pro.

From RivaTuner FAQ

Added SoftR9700 patch script for Catalyst 6.200 - 6.255, which allow you to enable software locked 8 pixel pipelines on RADEON 9500 based boards and turn any 128-bit RADEON 9500 into RADEON 9500PRO and any 256-bit RADEON 9500 into RADEON 9700PRO.

thanks for the responses, guys:). I ended up with a 128MB 9500PRO for $100, good enough for my LAN box;)
