I've had this error ever since I built my new PC with an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro. I first experienced it with C&C Generals, it would always happen about 5 minutes into the game. So I got the latest drivers, and it still happened. Then today when I was watching a 200MB avi file it happened again. That's when I decided I couldn't put off getting rid of this nasty error any longer.

I'm running Windows XP, and system temps almost always stay below 40C. Everytime the error happens I'm forced to reboot. I don't know what could be causing this, could someone help me out? Thanks

I've had this problem also when I installed a new video card into an old motherboard... I identified it to be my motherboard bios... If it's not the drivers and you have a fairly old motherboard, then perhaps your motherboard bios needs to be updated.

what version directx are you using? Can you check the event log for errors related to the fails draw operation. See if a dump file was created.

My motherboard isn't old. Its a MSI 655 Max. I'm not sure what version of DirectX I have on here actually. I did a search but I just found some files and no info. Where can I find what version I'm running? (WinXP) I might not be running any version at all...which would explain a lot :) I don't want to install any version of it until I'm sure that I don't have it though. I'm pretty sure the 9500 Pro supports DX9...

Installed DX9, and also installed a patch to the game. Now its even worse than before. It freezes up 5 seconds into the game instead of 5 minutes :(

WHat does the error say? Does it create a log in the event viewer probably in the application section?

The error says something like:

"The display device failed to perform a draw operation. Windows XP has determined this to be caused by the video card. You should update to the latest drivers"

Of course thats not exact, but that's the just of it. I read that article, its very helpful thanks Viper! By the way, how do I find out what chipset is on my video card? I have no clue :(
