Ok, so this card has always run flawlessly (with the 9700 driver hack) up until a few weeks ago. I hadn't played any games in a long time and went to install RON and I kept getting hard locks after a minute or so of game play. Ok, let me run down some key things here:
1) I reinstalled which did no good at all. I was going to anyway, though.
2) I tried several different drivers from the originals all the way up to 4.x. Both stock and soft modded. Same problem with all
3) Rest of computer is stable as a rock. Memtested and primed to death over the last couple days.
4) I've completely cleaned out case of all dust and other crap to make sure cooling wasn't a problem. 2 80mm sunnons pulling and 2 (+ power supply fans) for exhaust. Cooling is no problem. Cards fan is still running and the card does not get noticeably warmer under load.
5) MBM shows good power across all rails except 3.3v which is in constant fluctuation between 3.33 and 3.18v. This is unloaded and under load. What does this rail supply juice to anyway?
6) I've found that underclocking the card with rage 3d tweak gets me some degree of stability. I was able to make it about an hour in RON clocked down to 250/250. I tested for max oc on core and mem with atitool and got about 285/314 respectively. I don't know how reliable this thing is, though.
7) 3dmark 2k1 usually either hard locks/random reboots/crashes to desktop/loses display entirely on the first test. Hard lock is the most common, flip a coin on the rest. Every now and then when the moon is just right I can make it all the way through a run but it starts getting really laggy/choppy on the last few tests and never can make it past the first few seconds of the first test on subsequent runs.
8) All DirectX tests run with dxdiag come up roses.
Hmmm, I think that's about it. I've been planning to rebuild the whole system around the end of the year but I'm not ready to do everything yet so I don't really want to go buy just a new card. Hopefully I can get this worked out.
