I just updated windows media player and now I have all sorts of artifacts, checkerboarding etc. When I play stuff on my computer.

I do have my 9500 software hacked into a 9700. I didn't have any problems prior to this and if I play something in Kazaa preview player it doesn't have the artifacts. I think it definately has something to do with the update of WMP any suggestions??

Yeah, don't use WMP. Seriously. Unless you like the bloat then I recommend Media Player Classic (vobsub.edensrising.com) which is a clone of WMP 6.4 but with extra features. It also handles Real and QuickTime (new feature) when those codecs are installed. I recently discovered that a codec only install package of Real Media 9 is available too so RealPlayer or RealOne are not even necessary. I would post the link but forget where... it was a French site dealing with A/V encoding and such.

I just always used it because it was easy:) I try to keep windows and its components updated but really wish I hadn't updated windows media player. I have to use a system restore to get back to an older version now.

Is this media player you are talking about actually windows media player or something else??

So take the hack off and see if it fixes it.

Running hardware out of spec is never guaranteed.

I don't think so. Microsoft is certainly not going to release a product that has checker-board artifacts on it. Bugs like that just do not slip through anyone's QA, much less Microsoft's.

Well since we now have an expert replying to this problem maybe we can shed some light on it.

I have never had any artifacts whatsoever before upgrading WMP. So one would tend to believe that something in the upgrade has something to do with it. Wouldn't they?????

I also downloaded the player the other guy was talking about and no artifacts/checkerboarding. So now what?? Well I guess microsoft is missing something on this particular upgrade because I certainly had no problems prior.

There has to be something changed in the way the new WMP player works that doesn't agree with the card/hacked drivers. I will agree that I can most likely fix the problem by removing the hacked drivers but why would I all of the sudden have this problem only in WMP and only after upgrading WMP????
