what case are you using? that is fantastic temps. I'm using an opteron 180 with a well-ventilated case and cnps9700led. I'm at 49/50 right now at stock running 2x seti.

Believe it or not, one of the crappiest, cheapest cases ever. I really would like a new one. However, the airflow inside this one is ok due to the way I have the fans set out.

In fact, I've just noticed that I hadn't even hooked up the rear exhaust fan. :D Will hafta get that running and see if the temps drop a little more.

The processor is now orthos stable at 2.64Ghz. The temps are 34C idle and 44C under load, doesn't go above 44C, dips down to 43 every now and then and back up again. Think I'll leave it like that for now.

I'm pretty pleased with this chip for just fifty English pounds. :)[/quote]

my temps are not reporting correctly. I get 50c on both cores at idle and at full load. asus probe shows 46c cpu temp and doesn't vary, either. stupid computer...

mancunian,

So was the cpu upgrade worth it?

I'm wondering about replacing a 3200+ Winchester with a X2 4200+(65W) Windsor, but haven't decided if it's worth it, or better to just wait & build a whole new rig on an AMD Barcelona or Intel Penryn cpu in 6 months.

For the price you're looking at $70-80. I'd say it's well worth it, as compared to a whole system build.

Heck, if you're going to build a new system $70-80 isn't much anyway, and you could always use it as a second computer. :)

I went from a 3000 to the 4200 dualcore and I seen a difference playing games and multiple apps. ; )

Please post or PM how the heck I get a little bit of OC'ing without killing the Memory at 2-2-2-6 and HT at 5. Just want that little bit more performance. Thanks -JC

Agreed. And why do you need to keep HT multiplier at 5x anyway?

Re: memory, you will need to loosen timings or use a memory speed divider, but overclocking the HT bus sufficiently will make up for that (e.g. bus 200 -> 240, using 166 or 5/6 memory divider).

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and needing some help with oc'ing my 4200 x2. i can get it to 2.42 ghz at 220x11 but i cant get it to go any further. I keep seeing posts of everyone get 2.6-2.7 out of it but I've had no luck. I tried setting it to 240x11 with voltage at 1.45 but it says it clocking at 1678? My specs are

a8n-sli premium, 4200 64 x2, corsair cmx512-3200c2pt 1gig, hitachi 250gb sata harddrive, pny 7300gt.

I recently upgraded my Opteron 144 to the s939 X2 3800+. The thread is around here somewhere. It'll run orthos at 2.7 stock voltage with the oem AMD heatsink. 2.8 is OS stable but not Orthos stable. If I had a better heatsink 2.8 would be fine. 3.0 on air is possible if you have really good heatsink.

These are $58 bucks right now at newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103052

The X2 4200 has a better stock clock @ 2.2, so if you are NOT going to overclock, get it. It's 72.50 @ newegg right now.

If you plan to OC, skip the 4200 and get the 3800. Save $12.50 and put it towards a better heatsink!

edit - here was my thread from a month or so ago.

Sorry for the late reply. :)

Yes it was. The system is snappier and this thing encodes video much quicker now, which was my main reason for upgrading.

It was worth it too because of the cost, it was dirt cheap and has prolonged the life of this machine.

So definitely worth it. :)

I just made the same move and I thought that it was worth it. I was even running my 3200+ @ 2.5 on stock voltage and I'm currently running stock speeds with my X2 4200+ until I find a better cooler. It should make even more of a difference when I overclock it.

I just checked Newegg. $72.50 shipped is a great price for the 4200+ X2! I thought that I stole it last month for $80.

Any problems with getting Windows XP to recognize the two cores or is it necessary to reinstall WinXP? Could the reinstall be done without completely reformatting the hard drive and having to reinstall all programs?

I didn't have any problems. I just swapped processors and Windows recognized it. YMMV though.

I've got the 3800+ x2 running very stable at 2.7Ghz at 1.45v. I have a Zalman 9500 cooling the processor with arctic silver 5. The 4200+ should be able to do at least 2700Mhz

This is perhaps the most misunderstood aspect of it. You have veterins telling people that they need to reinstall the OS to get dual core to work, that is NOT correct. It has been confirmed and tested. All you need to do is pop the CPU in and let windows recognize it, and you are all done. Easy upgrade. I confirmed this as well, both with numbers and in actual use. I suppose there always could be an exception to this, but I really doubt it. Besides, everything has an exception.

I always thought you needed XP Pro for the os to see the second core or am I mistaken?

Yes, you are mistaken.

All versions of XP will run multiple core cpu's. XP pro will run multiple cpu's along with multiple cores. The difference between the two is mainly that XP home counts any number of cores on one socket as a single cpu and will use them. Xp Pro will not only do that will see two cpu's in two sockets.
