Looking to milk my 939 epox board a little longer as I don't want to spend money and don't want to do a reinstall, figure these are my two options as the board doesn't support the opteron...any thought on why I should go with one over the other, also I am either going to keep the stock HSF and get some thermal grease or buy an ARCTIC COOLING ALPINE64...thoughts appreciated, thanks

Dear Boz,

I am pretty sure that the socket 939 Opterons will work in your motherboard. They are just rebranded Athlon 64s (or, Athlon 64s are rebranded Opterons....whatever....but, same underlying architecture, i.e. Manchester, Denmark, etc. The Opeterons have more on chip L2 cache.)

Here is what is left at Newegg for socket 939, pickings are getting pretty slim:

The $73.50 4200 looks like the best price/performance....and is an Athon64, so no problems with your mobo.

Hey thanks,

Yeah noticed they were getting to be few and far between, as for the opteron the price is a bit much as well as I wonder if I want to invest that much in a dead system, is there any difference between the manchester and the toledo core not that the whopping $4 price difference is much

Also if it works do you think the Opteron 180 or 170 is something I should consider over this even at nearly twice the price?

Thanks

Toledo:

89W, E6 stepping....

Manchester:

89W, E4 stepping....

Looks like Toledo runs at a slightly lower voltage: would go with Toledo.

No. The larger L2 cache, 2 x 1MB, buys you maybe 3-4 % improved performance, depending on the application. You do get a nice stock heatsink/fan, and, a 3 year warranty, but I do not think that is worth $100.

I wouldn't buy one of the more expensive ones at this point myself. I picked up a dual core for my wife's machine, since it was like $65 with a heatsink...but if I was spending into the hundreds of dollars, I would just just straight to a c2d rig. If there were motherboards for c2d that had DDR support AND a full blown PCI-E 16x slot I already would have!

Hey thanks, I actually just picked up a 4400 X2 retail from tiger for $117, figured that was an ok mid ground and should hold me for another year or so with money left over for a new video card.
