I've got my stock 4400X2 heatpiped heatsink spare, i'm probably building a 754 system for my sister, there's no real point in splashing out on an expensive aftermarket cooler for her, but my spare stock cooler should work better than her stock one, if it can be fitted...

Can it?

It will work just fine. The retention mechanism for skt 754 and 939 is identical. I actually bought one of the x2/opteron 4 pipe coolers for use on a socket 754 3400+.

Socket 754, 939 and 940 all share the same heatsink mounts.

The newer 939 X2/Opteron heatpipe lowered the temps on my overclocked 754 Sempron 3100+ by 6C.

I use my stock 939 Heatsink on my 754, and since I don't OC, the 754 runs very nicely too.
