92mm fan on SK7

After reading this thread on installing a 92mm fan on an SLK800, I'm wondering if the same thing could be done for an SK7. Has anyone tried it? Short of taking the 92mm fan out of my PSU, I don't have one, much less one I'd want to put on my CPU. The SK7 also has clips for a 80x38mm fan.

The 92mm fan was installed using the 80x25mm fan setting, with the 80mm clips.

The thing is, there is an extra "tier" on the SLK-800, which just barely keeps the 92mm fan in place. But hey man, if you got an hour, just take it out of your PSU and check it out. It's worth a shot, right? ;D

If it does work, you can find 92mm fans that push 40 CFM at nearly silent (< 28 dB) volumes.

The only problem is that with a 92mm fan there would be a huge dead air spot right in the middle of the heatsink from the center hub of the fan, only the outer edges of your sk7 would be getting cooled.Making a duct with the fan away from the heatsink would be the best way to go so that the entire surface of the heatsink gets cooled.

Huge? I don't think it would be much bigger than the dead air spot on an 80mm fan. Besides, look at the SLK900 which natively supports 92mm fans. Unfortunately a duct won't work on the SK7 (or SLK800) for mounting a fan as there are no screw holes, just wire clips.

Yeah i have an slk900 and 92mm tornado fan, with the fan right on the heatsink and even that has a big dead spot,if i hold the fan a few inches away from the heatsink i see an improvement in my temps. What im going to do is mount the fan in the back of the case and run a duct to the heatsink, something like this HERE.

Or you can get something like the zalman fan bracket. With it, depending on your mobo configuration, you can have it over the heatsink and the chipset too. Haven't tried it but a 120mm fan might even fit.

The bracket looks like a good idea, however I can't see myself spending almost $10 in S&H to get one.

10 bux for shiping? :Q Do a google search for "zalman fan bracket" and you'll get more who carry it. I chose that one because the price was low, but I see they are one of those sites who make up the diff with rediculous shipping cost. Sorry about that.

A 92mm fan will fit on the sk7, you will need to bend the clips to make one fit as others mentioned. And it may not be centered, though that isn't a bad thing.

I'm going to give compusa a shot and see if they carry any at the local store. I know they carry the entire heatsink/fan combo at the store, though it's not listed on their site.

Tried it on my system since I had one of those zalman flower heatsinks around, see here. At that angle my temps did drop 2-3 degrees fahrenheit.

Struck out at compusa. They sell the Zalman stuff under "PC Toys" brand, but it's identical. They also mention "PC Toys has teamed up with Zalman..."

2-3F isn't a big drop, but every bit counts. :) What do you refer to when you say "that angle?"

The angle in the picture I linked to. I couldn't do it as I wanted to because my video card was in the way. I wanted to try it in a similar postion, but positioned straight instead of pointed up that way.
