You know why the old people get what they want? They vote.

Well yes. And they won't vote for those who want to make them re-take tests so do the politicians even bring it up if they want to win? Are there even candidates who want them to re-take tests to vote for?

Every time we're walking and see an old person behind the wheel we make sure to move clear out of the way. It's scary they can still get you behind other cars.

And the other day some 50's aged woman backed out her CRV right into a parked Corolla in a parking lot. We were walking by and she stared straight into our eyes with a look of panic, shifted into drive and drove off. These older people can easily blame stuck foot or whatever, but conscientiously are still aware of what's going on. Luckily for her there was no damage to the other car (not that she knew that) - otherwise I would've gotten her plate and left a note. It's amazing even knowing there are witnesses they will still just take off.

Yeah, like a 20+ year old wouldn't ever think of doing that. Right. :hmm:

I wonder if you would feel the same way when you turn 65?

The driver's insurance company will prob have to shell out upwards of $200K or more to cover the losses from this "accident". At that point any sane insurer will drop this person immediately. With this on his driving record the driver will find it very hard to find even basic insurance. I wouldn't be surprised if the driver isn't sued ... leading to even greater losses for the insurance company and possibly the driver.

:)

I had one sh!thead 93 year old destroy my wife's car because his freakin reflexes were COMPLETELY gone. I just about made sure he HAD to retake his driving test again before he was allowed back on the road.

And how exactly did you do this?

I requested the officer on the scene have a medical evaluation done on him before he can get back behind the wheel. Considering this guys condition, I see NO WAY he could pass an exam that would deem him fit to drive.

Is that supposed to be a joke? You're insinuating that I would feel differently about innocent people being run over and killed based on whether I'm 65 years old or not?

Your incredulous question aside, I fully agree with the rest of your post.

Oh, that's not the same thing at all.

after 90 you are exempt from traffic violations due to HR-3951 passed in 2003

Dang. This is why young people need to start voting. :( Not because the two party system isn't rigged because it is. But so when a politician looks at some demographic and spread sheet they'll see "hmmm I need the millennial vote to win this" and start giving a shit. Damn old people have power because they vote in numbers.

The problem with a lot of seniors is they won't give up driving on their own, even when it does become a safety issue. They see it as their independence. Though when you become a hazard, it's incredibly selfish to stay on the road.

That's what insurance is for :) Just take out the extra coverage.

Hilarious, but this is a serious problem. This country really needs to do something to get dangerous elderly drivers off the road.

Their children won't tell them to stop driving. Their doctors won't tell them to stop driving. Everyone KNOWS they shouldn't be driving.

I'd rather be in the middle of a thousand 16 year-olds during their first month behind the wheel.

I seriously think there should be a law requiring the road test every 10 years. That written test is a joke, especially the one you take if you are transferring a license or restoring it. Its like maybe 10 questions, and they're too easy anyway.

Hopefully all those people who got hit either had Full Coverage-type insurance (Collision coverage), or, while he was not cited with a ticket, hopefully his insurance is paying out to the other drivers.

As one who basically lost a car due to not having Collision coverage (no lien, not worth a terrible amount) when a multi-car accident had no party cited at fault, I sincerely hope those drivers can collect from his insurance company.
