Saw one at a Mustang show locally a few years back..thing freakin moved. IIRC when I talked to the owner, he needed to do some heavy frame reinforcing to handle the torque..

those mazda rotary engine are very efficent. From what i've heard, they make better power that regular gasoline engine.

doesn't the rotary engine of some of the later rx7 put out as much HP as the 5.0 liter.

225 is what mine put out. i never had it dynoed but that was how much it was supposed to put out.

that's what i suspected.

the rotory engine cannot possible touch the V8 for Torque, but in the Mazda Miata, the torque isn't going to make that much of a difference.

Ummm...the 5.0L in a 3000lb Mustang was pretty fast, before you ever modded them....you don't think a small block V8 in a little car like the Miata would be much?

Am I missing something?

Also, you are comparing a motor from a modern rx-8 to a late 80's, early 90's small block V8? Which do you think would be cheaper and easier to work on?

the Rotary engine would be WAY easier to fit in the bay. it would weigh less and help keep the balance of the Miata which is what makes the car so good. it would give it the extra pep needed. 250 hp isn't shabby in a car that just weighs 2000 lbs.

shoot, i had a Mustang LX with the 5.0 v8, great motor, but if i had the money and time for a project like this one, i'd put a Rotary engine in the miata before i'd put a V8 in it.

just my preference.

That's cool, but how much do you think a RX8 motor costs? A NEW 5.0 longblock with aluminum heads can be had for ~$3K...I'm guessing a RX8 motor would be closer to $10K. That motor would be putting out something in the 265-285 FWHP range...

As for size, I'll have to take your word for it, because I have no idea how large the RX8 motor is in comparison...

:)

Edit:

After a little bit of searching, I haven't found anywhere that has them for sale...

Hah, my uncle was telling me about this today, a guy somewhere in PA w/ a company called Monster Miata will take a stock mustang 5.0L V8 and put it into a miata and do other performance mods for 12k. The things go 0-60 in around or under 3 seconds, basically a viper killer.

wouldn't putting that 5.0 in the engine bay cause some serious weight balance problems.

i would hate to be driving that monster in snow.

yup exactly, but the Owner was arrested on 2 counts of murder, and 1 count of attempted, all wifes, basically shutting down the company however the engineer still sells DIY kits

That engine compartment doesn't look cramped to me. I wish my engine compartment was that empty.
