911 only calling for free?

So I remember hearing something a long time about providers being required to offer 911 service for anyone who has a phone. Is this true? I have a VOIP line but I want to have my land line available for 911 dialing ONLY. I know they offer a basic line for 5.50 a month and charge 10c per call, but I was wondering if I can expect to get something cheaper or for free.

but you do need a dial tone....so you do need to pay forlandline service if the OP wants to stay with that idea.

Do you have to have dial tone? I guess I should plug the phone in and see if I have dial tone at all...

Yup, if there'a a dailtone on the line then the call would be free, or you'd need the phone company to hookup whatever basic service they offer. If they need to do that it would be cheaper to just buy a $10 phone on ebay and have it on and charging at all times.

I ran into a MAJOR issue with VOIP/Vonage just last night. Something else to consider that is just as important as 911.

Poison Control!!

Vonage will not "allow/process" local toll free calls. Poison Control, even though are you dailing a "national toll free number" routes you to a local office. Call won't go through. Called 911 and asked them to connect, they couldn't (not sure if this was incompetence or inability to do so (I live in Mississippi so it could be either one)). They did give us the direct dial number for them though. Still couldn't get a connection. I believe that it was because the local direct-dial is associated with the national/local toll free number.

After returning from the ER, call Vonage and they are able to dial the direct number that we gave (of course they aren't local to MS so that could be the reason). They are going to look further into the issue anyway. Hopefully our misfortune will enable us to help someone else out down the road by getting teh problem addressed/resolved quickly.

What do you mean "on and charging at all times"? I don't want 911 service on a cell phone because they don't know where you are when you call!

You can't tell them? If you're able to make the call you should be able to tell them, in most cases.

If that's not an option then you'll have to get the minimum service from your phone company.
