1.2 tbird...
256 megs mushkin CAS 2 PC2100....
GIgabyte 7vrxp

I'm guessing that my proc is holding me back.... if I were to say, pop in a 1800+....... I would even further realize the full potential of this thing..... right? ;)

heh... just got my gf4 today... i love it!

I have a question though... is there a way to enable custom resolutions(without powerstrip/etc.) because my radeon had 1400 x 1050 available(my monitor is perfect at that res.... I can read the text and I still have a lot of desktop real estate...)

Yup its your cpu/ram .... I would get that 1800+ and oc it to 1.8GHz or close and another 256MB stick ... and you will defently get a big improvement! Good luck ;)

;) I agree, an extra 256MB would help a bit, but it is the CPU that is holding back 4600's full potential. However, don't despair, you will use up more of the untapped 4600 power by enabling AA & Aniso and even bumping up the res too, try it out in actual games and see what I mean. As for 3Dmark2001, 9000 marks is still very nice. Other configs which score 9000 marks are; P4-2.1ghz&Rad8500, AXP1900+&GF3, Ath1.4&GF4TI4400.

:) Here are some CPU scaling links which should help you to see what perf you could gain from upgrading the CPU:

AnAndTech CPU scaling with many gfx cards and using many games

AnAndTech newer CPU scaling with families of gfx cards and UT2003

Well, something isn't right, because I score 8500 with my Radeon 8500. I'm running an Athlon 1333@1565 with 512mb of PC133 ram. It sounds more like a driver problem to me; make sure you have AA/aniso turned off. I use a tweaker for my card, it really boosts things up.

zsouthboy, your score is about right where it should be, and a faster CPU would give it a decent boost. Just for reference...

3DMark Score 9892

Athlon XP 1700+
Abit KR7A-Raid
Crucial 512 MB PC2100
MSI GeForce 4 Ti4400
SB Audigy 5.1
D-Link 10/100 NIC
Lucent V.92 56K
Cyberdrive 36x12x48 CD-RW
Seagate 80 GB Barracuda IV HD

The cpu is definately holding you back more than the RAM. I would expect <500 points gain by upgrading to 512 mb. While upgrading to an xp 1800+ wouldn't really tap into the "full potential" of the 4600, it would certainly help a lot. Again for reference, the last time I ran 3dmark I scored 11170. My ti4400 was at 310/690 and my cpu (1800+) was at 1701 mhz.

CPU is your problem....I score a 9776 with a ti4200 @300\550 pushed by a XP1600+ at default speed....If kick up the fsb to 142 she'll bust 10000 :D

Reduce your sound settings and make sure sound card drivers and graphics card drivers are installed properly - make sure you don't have any background tasks running (press Ctrl+Alt+Del).

Faster CPU would help and also more [and preferably faster] memory.

Try overclocking!

Well.... my proc is unlocked(came from the factory like that)...... I know it will do at least 1.4(i have the alpha 8045... w00t).....I'll be back in 15 mins..... and I'll probably run 3dmark at 1.33 just to see the difference....

Results are in.... I did some bus OCing also.... my mushkin won't go past 143 without hanging in 3dmark.....

Processor Speed---------Bus Speed--------3DMARKS
1359 mhz......................143 x 9.5.............9459
1400 mhz......................133 x 10.5...........9556
1370 mhz......................137 x 10..............9579
1400 mhz......................140 x 10..............9707

Interesting.

My memory is keeping me from going past 143, my proc is holding me from going past 1400.

Will upping the DDR voltage in my bios likely make me able to go a little further, or is it not worth the risk?

increasing mem voltage prob not worth risk

interesting results though - Id have expected the higher FSB @ almost same clock speed to be highest - just shows that FSB increasing unstabilises the system and can have -ve effects

Raising the voltage should always enable a slight improvememt when o/c'ing anything, but the xtra heat and ageing effect really aren't worth it IMHO. Be very happy with the increased free and stable speed boost from 1.4ghz and 140FSB.

CPU. I get over (only a hair over, mind you :) ) 9300 with a GF4 Ti 4200 at 310/620, running an Athlon XP 1800+ w/ 256MB RAM.

How do you get your Radeon to do 1400x1050???

I also want to do this on the second head of my laptops GF4 so that it runs at same res as the TFT on it!!!

Use the Omega drivers, he puts 1400 x 1050 in the inf file...... I don't want to use the nVidia omegas, however..... I saw the comparison btw them and the regular drivers.....
