What is going on?! The processor keeps increasing temperature!! It rebooted at 197ºF!! I'm thinking it's reading wrong or something. The connection for the HS and the die is fine and I'm using Arctic Silver HS compound. The board is a Abit KT7 non raid. Please help.

(The processor has a 1 year warranty so if it fries I'll get it replaced.)

paruhd0x, maybe your getting a false reading. try popping your computer cover and touching the hs to see if its real hot.

what heatsink are you using?

are you absolutely sure that the heatsink is sitting properly? is the heatsink fan plugged in? 81C is very dangerous(read temperature wise) for a socket A chip.

The heatsink got hot enough to cause pain when I touched it... It is a generic heat sink from tufshop.com that is supposed to be used on Tbirds

i dont think your heatsink is up to task for handling hte t-bird's heat. I would turn off the computer and get a better heatsink before using it again, persoanlly.

I'm receiving a 1.2GHz Tbird tomarrow hopefully which is retail so it will have a retail heat sink. I'm hoping its the processor so I can run on the 1.2 and RMA the 900....

You are most certainly welcome!! :D

Btw, they need to make some sort of "Thermal Compound Remover" .. that stuff just doesn't come off...

my 800 mhz chip runs at 50C with a chrome orb and the case open. i've reseated it a few times and the heatsink is COOL (i daresay cold?) to the touch. no, not cold, but it should be doing a better job. should i take off the little pads on the processor? i have a feeling they are holding the heatsink above the arctic silver...
thanks.

If your heatsink is cool then you are likely getting inaccurate readings. The rubber things should be on there! Even w/o thermal grease I think your heatsink would be hot to the touch if your CPU was running that hot. My Chrome Orb is about warm enough for my readings (44-46 idle, up to 49 full load...lowering the voltage cooled it down, but it crashed a lot)

something about the orb/super orb design really malfs up mb temp readings. They tend to be underread by about 10-15C(both of them, that is).

I'd keep the feet on the chip, and i'd be very wary of trying to push a chip past 1ghz using the c-orb.

I don't understand. The heatsink was hot enough to burn you but it wasn't on properly? I would think it would be warm if it was doing its job and cold if it wasn't. Seems backwards to me.

How did you get The Chrome Orb on the KT7 ?? Did you cut off some of the fins ?? The only way the CORB fits is if its installed backwards and thats not good ??

They do make thermal compound remover, one of the OC sites reviewed it lately but I can't find it. HOWEVER, I just removed generic thermal compound (came with the CPUs) from a P3 and an Athlon last night with many q-tips and isopropyl alcohol and 100% of it came off...chips were clean as the day I got them. Even some of the dried compound came off after a bit of rubbing.

I have a super orb and Abit KT7 mb...I had no problems whatsoever getting the super orb on there. HOWEVER, it only fits one direction. If it doesn't fit for you, turn it around 180 degrees so that the 'clasp' is closest to the offending capacitors. That should fix your problem.
