I recently purchased a 900mhz Tbird and it's running about 58C at the default voltage. I built a system w/ a 700Mhz Tbird for my son and it's running around 43C. It seems like 58C is hotter than it should be at the default voltage. Shouldn't it be closer to the 40C-45C range?

well lots of members are asking about temperature ranges.
the socket A mobos don't give exact readings and may be off.

but than again, your reading is high.
for what it's worth, my readings are 45C max

also, if your ambient temp is high than the cpu temp will also be high
(my ambient is 21C

if you placed the hsf on by yourself, check to see if it's in good contact with the cpu.

Do the 700Mhz and the 900Mhz use the same default voltage? I bought the CPU/cooler(900) from Step ThermoDymanics, Inc (http://www.step-thermodynamics.com)
and the toute the system as the "best". Needless to say, I'm not very impressed right now.

This temp is with the case open!!!

I'd have to check. I think the bios date on the 900Mhz system was Sept. 2000. I'd have to call my son on the date of his.

okay, your temps are okay, since you are using Asus's updated bios...

what is your ambient case temp? You may want to add some more case-cooling.

also, how much thermal compound are you using? i doubt that it can make THAT much of a difference, but if you have too little or too much your temps will rise. how big is the case and how is the air circulation? the heatsink can't dissipate the heat if the air being sucked/blown through it is already hot ;)
