Even back in the day the duron was close to the tbird, now its a new core I would go with the duron.

even though the duron uses the same type of core as the new XPs.......performance wise the 900 would still be superior to the 1ghz duron. the new durons still use a 200 fsb....... and have less l2 cache. plus if you plan to o/c you will easilly get more out of the athlon than the duron.

the 1ghz duron can "easily" overclock to 1.2

sure it's not an athlon... but i'm pretty sure it could beat a 900mhz athlon

With the Duron you could easily hit 1.2 while pushing the FSB up to 133, that would definately make it perform better then the Athlon.

I'm new with AMD (was Intel guy for the longest time)..

I just brought a Duron 1gig, and was thinking about whether I can set my MB to 133 Mhz (only 100 or 133 on my Biostar M7VIB) without damage to the CPU/MB..

As an aside, I got PC2100 DDR ram, and there is a voltage setting for 2.55, 2.65,2.75,2.85 with default at 2.65. Why is that there? Isn't it standard at 2.50V? Can I OC my ram?

Sure! I won't hurt to try. You may have to bump up the core voltage a tad though. If it doesn't work you may have to reboot holding the [insert] key (or clear the cmos).

I believe the first athlon to use a 266 fsb was the 1ghz. Therefore the Duron 1ghz and Athlon 900 both have a 200fsb. The Duron should be able to overclock more with good cooling. They should be pretty even in most tests but remember the Duron has data prefetch, SSE instructions, and runs cooler. Also the Athlon 900 is really old compared to the newer Morgan Durons.

I've already recommended my roomate into getting a Duron 1ghz+. He doesn't want to spend a lot and doesn't need top of the line and the newer Durons will work great. Throw a GF2 or higher and you've got a cheap, but good gaming system.

Yup, after putting the system together, I was surprised to find that in addition to a single FSP jumper for 100/133 Mhz, the biostar had the follow BIOS settings (soft switch):

DRAM 100/133/Clock-speed

CPU core voltage +/- in very small steps!
CPU speed settings (with variable PCI clk speeds) from 100/33 (FSB/PCI) to ~119/38
(I forget, but I think there may be higher ones..)

Currently, I've just installed the standard software, and ghosted C:. Running Sandra burn-in right now. Tomorrow morning, if everything looks good, I'll up the speed and do some testing.

BTW, the SIS Sandra scores for my Duron@1ghz is quite a bit lower than the 1ghz Athlon in the benchmarks..
