Smuggling Phones in a Sewerage Pipe

Smugglers have been caught using a sewerage pipe to smuggle mobile phones from Hong Kong into China mainland. They were reported to have rented a single-room apartment in Shatoujiao, which is just a few metres away from the border. They then tunneled down to reach a sewerage pipe which runs across to the border to Hong Kong, where the phones would be collected by van and taken away for sale.

The official news agency, China Daily reported that the Shenzhen Customs anti-smuggling force took action last month, capturing a gang leader, a truck driver, and five men working in the tunnel.

About 900 mobile phones and 120,000 electronic chips, worth roughly US$200,000 were seized in the raid.

Two Hong Kong residents are still being hunted for. "We have reported the case to the Hong Kong customs and police. We think the Hong Kong suspects will be punished," Song, deputy director of the anti-smuggling division of Shenzhen Customs said. "The suspects confessed that they spent nearly 20 days digging the tunnel and used it three times," Song told reporters.
