Maps of War
Who has controlled the Middle East over the course of history? Pretty much everyone. Egyptians, Turks, Jews, Romans, Arabs, Greeks, Persians, Europeans...the list goes on. Who will control the Middle East today? That is a much bigger question.

I still don't understand why everyone in history has wanted the middle-east, it's too hot.

Pretty cool, but it would have been cooler if they showed the development of the empires before they took over parts of the middle east, not just what they looked like afterwards.

Yea, like how they expanded instead of the just the central point and a circle expanding outwards.

Mongol empire really looked like it kicked ass.

Neat, there are ones on the list that I've never heard of. Large ones, too.

hehe wow very cool.

Wasn't the Caliphate more of a centralized Muslim state, much like the Roman Catholic Church, headed by the Pope, which leads the world's catholics?

There should be a centralized Muslim organization much like the Roman Catholic Church; but of course, not headed by government leaders and what not.

Did you even bother to watch the damn slideshow?
The ONLY country that has legitimate claim is Egypt. The Kindgom of Israel was formed in 1050, predated only by the Egyptian Empire.

So from a historical perspective Israel DOES have a right to the land.

Now granted, that land was taken from them by about every Empire since 1050, but thats another story.

Pretty much. Supposedly, Mohammed didn't leave a clear line of sucession on how everything was supposed to be ruled when he died though.

Still, I always found it interesting how people always first point to the Crusades when talking about Christian imperialism (or whatever) and ignore the fact that the Crusades were, in part, a response to the Muslim Empire invading Europe. They had taken over Spain and were making in-roads into France before they were finally turned back.

I think that's called Iran...J/K

With all the different Islamic ethnic groups, I don't think that will ever happen. The Shiites, Sunnis, and others just don't get along.

There was more than one caliph at a time during the caliphate reign. The maps are flawed becuase most of the time they were at war with each other.
