90-100% CPU Load.....burning up my laptop

Been having this issue for the past week now. CPU temps have been over 80c on idle. Thats from 35-40c (Normal temps) on idle. I had to use RM Clock to undervolt my CPU to bring the temps down from 80+ to 60-65c idle, which is still high. Ive tried damn near EVERYTHING. Scanned for malware both on normal and safe mode with dozens of anti malware programs. I cleaned all fans with air canister and to be honest, there wasn't much dust on it anyways. Checked google, prayed to baby jesus...and still nothing. I don't have any programs on startup running in the background and in the task manager, oddly enough, CPU usage stays around 3-5% on idle, yet cpu load is fluctuating between 90-100% all the damn time, even in safe mode.

So I come to my favorite forums, with my favorite forum friends to ask for help.

Thanks.

EDIT - Can't believe I forgot to post my specs, although I dont think it matters much in this case.

Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 / 2.26 GHz
Win 7
4GB DDR3 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS

Have you tried a different operating system, like a Live CD linux distro to check whether it is hardware or software related?

I would image the laptop then do a fresh install of the OS. If the problem is gone then it was something you didn't detect in the original install. If the problem comes back then its hardware.

Could be heat. Make sure the fan's working, and the heatsinks aren't clogged with dust. I had a Dell laptop once, where the heatpipes actually went bad(!). I'm not sure what happened there. Maybe the liquid leaked out, but I didn't see any sign of that happening.

This.

You first need to check if it's software, then if you establish it is look at the OS, if you establish it's not you know to focus on the hardware 😉

yea just system idle process (90s) taskman (2-4) and my internet connection manager (2-4)

so your 90-100% CPU usage isn't showing up on Task Manager? like you'll watch the processes (sorted by CPU usage, descending, watching the top) for a while, see nothing, then go back to the Performance tab and see 80-100% usage spikes? I find this a little hard to believe tbh.

He said system idle process is taking 90+%

I would clean and replace the thermal paste on the cpu/hs just to be sure. Did you check the fins for stoppage? Is there plenty of air coming out of the exhaust? Your temps shouldn't be 80+C.

FINALLY!!! Someone has the sensible answer.

Pull the CPU heat pipe and fan out of the laptop and clean them thoroughly. Just blowing canned air in there will not remove most of the caked on shit. Remove and reapply the fresh thermal compund and check the fan for proper operation.

If your CPU is running hot while idling this is not a software problem.

If the cleaning doesn't work, it may be a thermistor malfunction making the system 'Speed Step' you into oblivion.
