If its not the artificial MSG what is it in Chinese Food that always guaranteed headache for me next morning?
sugar/carb overload?

99% of the things you'll find on the menu of a typical American chinese restaurant are pretty bad for you, it's just not because of the msg.

That's because it's not real 'Chinese' food. My parent's won't go into a Chinese takeaway's anymore, they hate the food that bad.

Whoa, you missed the most dangerous chemical of them all, Dihydrogen Monoxide! DHMO can kill you if it's inhaled; prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage; it has been found in biopsies of precancerous tumors; and it's actually a major component of acid rain and it corrodes metals. That's right - SOMETHING COMMONLY IN YOUR FOOD IS KNOWN TO CORRODE METAL.

Do you get the same headaches when you eat fried chicken from fastfood places? Most places that serve fried chicken use msg in when they "marinate" their chicken to allow for the chicken to sit under heat lamps for up to 4 hours.

I don't eat fried chicken. I do not find it very appetizing, no matter who makes it.

That list has ingredients that are included in 99.99% of all processed food, about half of which there is no real evidence to prove that they are harmful.

Cue the debate.

No not 99.99%. If you avoid preprocessed foods you immediately avoid most of those.

I try to avoid all that stuff. I'm not hardcore about it, but when given the choice, I usually take my food sans crap. Of course other times I take the Doritos :^P

I don't get the appeal of Doritos. I far prefer plain flavoured ruffle chips.

It's just an occasional thing for me. I have a problem in general with Frito Lay, but sometimes break my boycott for a bag of Doritos. My preference is Utz or Martins kettle cooked potato chips :^)

clearly you need to test this by eating a spoonful of MSG straight out of the jar.

report back, stat! :p

I technically could actually test this as we have raw MSG crystals at home here that we could add to food. We almost never use it but the white power is sitting there in the kitchen downstairs.

Don't do it. It'll leave the foulest taste in your mouth, that takes forever to go away :^(

it could be that your body reacts to a certain threshold of msg. but MSG occurs naturally in a lot of delicious foods. I believe its standard knowledge now that apart from the 5 tastes you have, there is the 6th, which is called 'umai', also known as the ability to taste msg.

Actually it's Umami and it's the flavour of "savory foods" or foods that contain the "carboxylate anion of glutamic acid", basically the flavour of protein.

Accent is pure MSG I believe. When I was young I sprinkled a bunch in my hand, and ate it. I had the taste in my mouth for hours.

Looks like you are right. Just googled Accent and it appears to be pure MSG. Will take your word for it. :D I think the stuff we buy is some no name brand from China Town.

Lol good luck eating in modern society without getting any of that.

That looks more like a list to scare people then anything.

I always get a kick out of people saying you can't eat without getting any of those things. Just eat natural...I can't remember the last time I had food with any of the things on that list in them. HFCS actually kills my stomach now the few times I eat food with it.

There's nothing wrong with Olestra. It just reacts badly with a few people, giving it it's bad reputation.

Even easier than remembering a list. If you cannot buy the ingredient that is listed as a product for sale on the store shelf as its own product, don't eat it. Sugar, flour, etc, all can be bought as products. I have yet to see dipotassium phosphate for sale in the spice rack section :)

artificial colors, flavorings, sweeteners, corn syrup, vegetable oil, and MSG are all for sale on the store shelves as their own product.

personally, I find all the omgchemicals fear to be a little silly. I eat (almost) whatever I want, in moderation, and am pretty healthy.

Ingredient Why it is Used Why it is Bad
Artificial Colors
Chemical compounds made from coal-tar derivatives to enhance color.
Linked to allergic reactions, fatigue, asthma, skin rashes, hyperactivity and headaches.
Artificial Flavorings
Cheap chemical mixtures that mimic natural flavors.
Linked to allergic reactions, dermatitis, eczema, hyperactivity and asthma
Can affect enzymes, RNA and thyroid.
Artificial Sweeteners
(Acesulfame-K, Aspartame, Equal®, NutraSweet®, Saccharin, Sweet’n Low®, Sucralose, Splenda® & Sorbitol)
Highly-processed, chemically-derived, zero-calorie sweeteners found in diet foods and diet products to reduce calories per serving.
Can negatively impact metabolism
Some have been linked to cancer, dizziness hallucinations and headaches.
Benzoate Preservatives
(BHT, BHA, TBHQ)

Compounds that preserve fats and prevent them from becoming rancid.
May result in hyperactivity, angiodema, asthma, rhinitis, dermatitis, tumors and urticaria
Can affect estrogen balance and levels.
Brominated Vegetable Oil
(BVO)

Chemical that boosts flavor in many citric-based fruit and soft drinks.
Increases triglycerides and cholesterol
Can damage liver, testicles, thyroid, heart and kidneys.
High Fructose Corn Syrup
(HFCS)
Cheap alternative to cane and beet sugar
Sustains freshness in baked goods
Blends easily in beverages to maintain sweetness.
May predispose the body to turn fructose into fat
Increases risk for Type-2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer
Isn’t easily metabolized by the liver.
MSG
(Monosodium Glutamate)

Flavor enhancer in restaurant food, salad dressing, chips, frozen entrees, soups and other foods.
May stimulate appetite and cause headaches, nausea, weakness, wheezing, edema, change in heart rate, burning sensations and difficulty in breathing.
Olestra
An indigestible fat substitute used primarily in foods that are fried and baked.
Inhibits absorption of some nutrients
Linked to gastrointestinal disease, diarrhea, gas, cramps, bleeding and incontinence.
Shortening, Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Oils
(Palm, Soybean and others)
Industrially created fats used in more than 40,000 food products in the U.S.
Cheaper than most other oils.
Contain high levels of trans fats, which raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol, contributing to risk of heart disease.

BVO is nasty, I'll give them that. HFCS is no fucking different to a human body than pure cane sugar, none of those possible "effects" mean shit; the point is Americans eat too much fucking sugar period, doesn't matter if it's HFCS, pure cane sugar, beet sugar, sugah sugah...

Arguments against artificial flavors and colorings are the worst I've ever seen, like many others mentioned, they could just be lab synthesized flavorings, who cares?

Seasoning shouldn't have any of those ingredients in them.. Just eat fruit, veggies, meats, use natural spices and not the mixed kind. Organic dairy usually won't have any of that stuff in it. A lot of people were raised on shit food by their parents so it completely baffles them how to NOT eat shit food. Fortunately my mom made sure I ate good growing up, so it's like second nature now.

The closer you get to eating actual whole food in it's natural state the better. Think of it this way:

Awful: Apple flavored drink
Less Awful: Apple Juice
Decent: Organic Apple Juice
Good: Apple.
Better: Organic Apple.

Everything I eat would come from the last two on that list pretty much.

A-fuckin-men.

'UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH HFCS MADE MY KIDS FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT WHAAARGARBLE".

No, you fucking land whale sow. Cramming piles of sugar coated lard down their throat made them fat. Encouraging them to lead a sedentary lifestyle so you don't feel so bad about being a fat piece of shit yourself, made them fat. Eat less. I personally don't eat anything with stuff from that list on it. But if I did, I wouldn't suddenly become a bloated pig...because I eat in moderation.
