Microcenter has 2 3.5" bay 9-in-1 readers on sale right now. $25 - $20MIR. Local for me, so only tax involved, but shipping might make this a bad deal.

There are two versions. One has a front USB 2.0 port, and the other has a Firewire port instead.

XP Model w/ USB port

DV Model w/ Firewire port

There are different rebates for each:

XP Rebate

DV Rebate

Here are the product descriptions for those of you too lazy to click the links:

XP Model:
Unique 9-In-1 breakout box that can be installed in a 3.5 or 5.25 drive bay for easy front panel access, featuring combination of reader/writer for 8-in-1 combination reader/writer supporting Smart Media (3.3V ), Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Sony Memory Stick, Sony Memory Stick Pro, Compact Flash (both Type I & II), IBM Microdrive, plus BONUS slot for next generation of SD flash media standards and one (1) front USB 2.0 ports

DV Model:
Unique 9-In-1 breakout box that can be installed in a 3.5 or 5.25 drive bay for easy front panel access, featuring combination reader/writer for 8 combination reader/writer supporting Smart Media (3.3V ), Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Sony Memory Stick, Sony Memory Stick Pro, Compact Flash (both Type I & II), IBM Microdrive, plus BONUS slot for next generation of SD flash media standards and front IEEE 1394 Firewire port

I also just noticed that if you look at the pictures in the rebate form, it shows that these come with a beige, black, and silver faceplate.

Does it give you USB2.0 or Firewire or do you already have to have that on your MOBO or via a PCI card?

Is this the Soyo that everyone on AT rants about being slow on rebates IF they redeem them at all?

Thanks

very nifty. the only problem is that it is a soyo rebate. I might attempt it anyway but soyo rebates are notorious. They generally show up at around the 9 month mark. Longest rebate timeframe anywhere so beware.

I did some checking, and Newegg has some alternative models and such listed here.

Most are around $15 and up. There are two very similar units for $15 + $4 shipping.

This one is $12 with free shipping.

Good find Cheetah8799, it even has free shipping...looks like an adaptor is needed for the XD picture cards to make it work

One perk of this one - it includes the adaptor to use it in a 5.25 bay. Since that's all I have, I'd take this over the Newegg ones.

Bump for good deal (SOYO rebate notwithstanding). This will remove some clutter from my desk!

Yes to the latter...
Specifically, you need USB 2.0 on the motherboard unless your USB 2.0 PCI card happens to have a USB connector that is "non-standard" (i.e. - exposed pins). And to clarify, the only port with USB 2.0 is the one on the front; the card readers are all USB 1.1.

Is that really ture? The card reader(s) itself is only USB 1.1?

that is true- if you buy the USB version then the whole thing is USB1.1. If you buy the IEEE version, then you get USB2.0 interface (but no USB port in the front)- which in my opinion is quite pathetic.

Just waiting for my rebate to show up magically!

Ok. Thanks.

I want to get the IEEE version to give me a front connector for my video cam BUT, I don't want to give up the USB 2.0 card reading capability I currently have with my external Sandisk reader.
