Office Max has a PCTel modem for $29.95, it has a $20 instant rebate, for $9.95 total. I bought one, and gave it to my son for his computer, I couldn't believe it when he told me it was connecting at 53,333. Yep, I checked and it does connect at 53,333 evry time, went to cnet and tested with their download tester, they showed 53.8k. Wow, a $9.95 modem outperforms my USR external sportster, and my 3COM pccard modem.

PCTel modems are junk. If it works for you, consider yourself lucky.
These are, hands down, the worst modems out there...

You can often get these modems for $5, and sometimes for free,
after rebate.

ANY other chipset is better than this one.

It is a Prime Periphals modem, it is a software HSP modem, it works great in my kids Celeron 550, he does online gaming and said it works much better than his USR isa modem did.

Hot deal if you can get it to work. Personally, if I was getting a winmodem, would rather spend 10 bucks more for a Lucent.

Several years ago, I tried a PcTel modem, it was so bad i gave it away, Lucent's worked pretty good, but that was with Cyrix 200's, maybe they improved their software, maybe you just need a fast CPU.

I've purchased the Mach2 modems before either free or almost free and installed them in customers computers who had nothing but trouble. I would wait to get a better brand like Viking or Creative. Usually the big box stores will have rebates on these also.
