Dreamhost is dreaming if they think they can maintain a profit at this rate. If you put any information on sites that you consider "valuable", be sure you have local backups on YOUR computer so we dont see another cyberwings fiasco.

As Rossman says, if it's too good to be true, it usually is.

Dreamhost was offering some other crazy-insane deal during their last anniversary... So I'm guessing they're seeing enough profit to do this once a year...

For $10, I seriously don't see where you can go wrong. Even if you cancel at the 11th month mark to make sure you don't get automatically billed after 1 year, this is hotness.

nvm, got it.

Simply put, they don't make profit on this, they loose a substantial amount of money. Over 50% of that price they have to pay just to register the domain for you. They bank on the fact that you will be satisfied with their services, and decide you will keep your hosting after the year is up.

It's not a total unrealistic marketing tactic, because it's not uncommon for companies to pay $100 for a new client.

You get what you pay for.

unless it's just me, the offer is now dead as they're now offering 800 MB with 120 GB of bandwidth for 9.95 a month plus one time setup fees

I dont agree wih Rossman on this. I have been using them since '99. The 77c deal was to be only for the first 777 people. They took the deal off the front page now, and if you know the code you can still get it.
They lose money short term, but after the year, and people forget to cancel (Same theory that is used with rebates), they make their money back. Most users won't get near 120GB a month in transfer, and we all know how cheap disk space is these days. IMO

Rally1 - You get what you pay for.

As long as you're happy with the service, that's what matters.

Well I pay $10 a month for the same service others pay 77c, so with your logic that will make it better, so I should be ok ;) .

cPanel licenses are expensive.

Besides either this web host will be dead in a few months or service/uptime will be spotty.

Bah! What the heck do you know about dh? I've been using dreamhost for over a year now, and my friends for longer, and they are simply awesome. Everything's fast, you get such good access (ftp, web logs, telnet, ssh, tons of subdomains), and the support feels really personal. Uptime/service is NOT spotty at all.

Sounds like a great deal, but the whole 2-4 hour wait time to create accounts, databases, etc. is a huge PITA. I had to transfer an account away from DH, what a doozy.

In their control panel, you can set the option to terminate your account at a specific date. So if you don't want to go over a year with them, set the date for the day it's set to reset the billing cycle. Heck, you can set it a week before the closing date just to be safe!

GoDaddy has this new instant transfer thing, not sure how it works, but it sounds pretty easy to me... Personally, when I ordered the DreamHost account, I purposly chose one that I wouldn't mind losing. So no big loss for me if I lose the domain name (which is the worst that could happen).

I think it is no longer going. I just tried and it brought my total (after entering the 777 promo code) to: $104.64

Wow, that's the catch?

EDIT: Found the catch - you can't host media files. (Still a very nice deal, however):

Q. Which files are accepted?
A. Currently we support standard html and images files, which means .htm, .html, .pdf, .gif, .jpg ,.png , .js, .css, .swf, .mid, .jar and .class. The size of your individual files should be < 85kb. Files exceeding this size will get automatically deleted. Besides that, there's no limit on the number of files you can host in your account.

I'm surprised they didn't lock his account after he posted the first one.

It could have been an innocent mistake but now I doubt that's the case.
