Don't you live in San Francisco? I don't remember any of your buildings getting hit.

you dont think new yorkers can come up with a better use for $60 million a year? how about ending homelessness, free wifi, cleaner streets, a huge party with free food?

I think it's just another example of idiots spending money they don't have on what we don't need. If you can't run a memorial on voluntary contributions it shouldn't be run at all.

I'd rather have seen the Trade Center rebuilt in record time.

Whatever happened to elegant simplicity for memorials? The Vietnam War Memorial in DC is a perfect example of how these things should be done. That 9/11 memorial looks like an abomination.

Biggest problem is that the major anticipated revenue source stalled out (9/11 museum) because of cost and bickering between the city and state. Once that opens I'd venture that it will cover substantially more than 40% of operating costs, 2M visitors sounds like a pretty conservative estimate.

You want to look at some real waste the 3.4 billion dollar (and rising) Calatrava designed PATH transit hub would be a better place to start.

I saw it the other day, it's actually pretty well done. I'm not going to argue for it's expenditure though.

I'm withholding judgement until the entire WTC area is no longer a giant construction site.

I could see the memorial and museum being a major tourist draw to a section of the city that might otherwise get passed over by tourism dollars.

The Trade Center is owned by the Toll Authority, the reason for the extreme high tolls is to pay for this.

$12 to cross a bridge

America deserves to pay the very most

Enjoy
If you hate America so much get the fvck out!!!!!!!!!!

If it's their local money who gives a shit how they spend it. If you don't like it feel free to move there and run for office and change things. If not, you're just an outsider looking in with no say at all.

Nope, definitely belongs to land owners and rich bank execs. They need to buy more private islands. Think of their children!

By comparison, the National Park Service budgeted $8.4 million this year to operate and maintain Gettysburg National Military Park and $3.6 million for the monument that includes the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.
"The fact of the matter is that this was a place that was attacked twice," said Joseph Daniels, the foundation's president and chief executive.
And that affects the costs to operate the monument how??

Just operating the two massive fountains that mark the spots where the twin towers once stood will cost another $4.5 million to $5 million annually, said the foundation's spokesman, Michael Frazier.
Perhaps they should contact a YMCA to see how they manage to keep their pools clean for a fraction of that.

Security costs. You have to go through an airport like screening to get in. AFAIK, that is unique to this site for the NPS.

Large fountains are expensive to maintain and operate, far more so than regular pools. There are also two of them in this case. I remember hearing the fountain at the Bellagio costs between 4-6 million to operate annually.

The port authority is corrupt as shit! they raised all the tolls right before an independent audit of their expenditures came out. They used higher operating and administration costs as a justification for raising the tolls. A month later, the audit came out and showed how inefficient they are and how to easily cut their operating costs by large margins without sacrificing their services. I wonder why they pushed the toll hikes so quickly!? Could it be that once the audit report came out, there is no way they could have raised the tolls?!
