9-11 computer game in making

It's a UT2K3 mod. Not a big deal. It's not like they are selling it (are they?).

Scenarios
Spawn points in different parts of building; some have possiblity for survival, some don't
Can escape because user is at low level
Rushing through dark stairwells with cellphone == escape
If firemen are encountered, user is saved
Floor in flames - can't escape
Ceiling collapses
Have to choose between being engulfed by flames or jumping from window
Cement/building dust/smoke make it difficult to breathe; no facemask causes life to deplete, so find facemask

If this wasn't named after 9-11, most people would think it would make for a great survival horror game. Strange isn't it? I guess it is understandable, but I don't subscribe to the feeling that it is completely horrible.

Now, if the game was about flying planes into buildings for points, then maybe I could understand a certain disgust.

9-11 Survivor is a game project that examines the role of media in our culture, and the influence that continuous, hyper exposure has on our overall perception of the distinctions between reality and media mediation. This project raises questions regarding how and why popular media forms, such as games and movies, deal with tragedy, conflict and violence.
Way poor taste, but these guys are trying to make a statement (or at least, they say they are).

so.."Have to choose between being engulfed by flames or jumping from window" help us learn how to deal with tragedy?

It's about respecting those who died in the disaster, and the feelings of those who lost someone. I don't expect anyone who didn't lose someone in teh tragedy to understand, but for me, I find this game extremely distasteful and disrespectful. They could choose some other, fictional, venue to create a survival game from.

I don't buy that. Why are WWII and Vietnam War games alright with that point, but this isn't?

Is there a certain amount of years after a tragedy that you're allowed to not pay respect for the people who lost loved ones in a disaster?

I feel the game is distasteful, but I don't believe it has anything to do with respect, but more to do with the way the game is setup.

Uhhh, no.

I get the impression that they're trying to get people to look at things like 9-11 related DVDs, 9-11 related sweatshirts, 9-11 related beer mugs, 9-11 related coffee table books, 9-11 related bumper stickers, etc. in a different light.

And while I think it is in extremely poor taste, I think that may be the point.

i think what they are doing with the project is make them know how to recreate tragedy and violence sceen. Then they can use those skills on making movie, next games or whatever.

There's a big difference. WWII and Vietnam War games are about just that, war. This module is about an attack on innocent civilians who had no chance to defend themselves, and the purpose is to try to escape, or pick a way to die. That's tasteless. In war games, you're given a objective, you have the means to defend yourself and accomplish objectives. You also don't find many people who experienced said wars enjoying those games. You're entitled to the way you feel, but I feel that it's disrespectful. No sense in arguing.

I have to agree there. Yes, the game is in poor taste (and looks boring as hell) but not really any more so than the thousands of productst that were pimped out right after the tragedy. Seeing competing 9-11 DVDs on the shelves was just about the most digusting thing. At least these guys aren't asking for your money over it.
